I've recently acquired a dell latitude d430 and I've seen where people can install lion (10.7.5) on it. I've found no good tutorial on how to do so and I'm wondering if anyone can give some pointers. I'm willing to go down to snow leopard if need at least to 10.6.7. Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi,

I've used the installation guide here: http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/documentation/on my latitude d420 however once it boots and starts the loading process it hangs on the grey apply screen with OSX LATITUDE logo on. Trying with OS X Lion.

I also could not find a bootpack for a d420 so tried with a d620.

If anyone could help with this installation that would be great thank you.

Well the d420 had a 1.2 coreduo and would not run anything other than snow leopard. So i looked online and came across these forums and herve's post and found out the d420's limits. i looked on ebay and found a 1.33gz core2duo mobo for 10$ and some copper shims for 5$ and i did a little swap. Anyway, I finally got Mountain Lion running in 32 bit mode. i followed herve's guide almost to the letter. edf v5 dont find squat anymore. luckily herve had a nice boot pack that had everything. one thing with the boot pack in the boot plist i had to remove arch=i386 to get it to boot the installer for 10.8.5. easy enough. then the hardest part, tracking down mlpf v0.03 for 10.8.4. i managed to find a mediafire link, then i installed it to my best usb stick and mlpf wouldnt boot...so i made a partition out of left over lion space 9 gb and had to do mlpf on the internal hd & installed with the boot flags herve provided arch=i386 -f. afterwards i had to boot into lion to run myhack and do the my fix on ml, wouldnt let me do it from ml. I did the full fix rebooted and did the script for rebuilding 32 bit cache and it failed after 10 minutes, but its working and running. Im typing this up on the frankintosh. kodi plays fine, youtube works on seamonkey. Big thanks go out to herve! I made a video

	EDP being in semi-permanent revamp, here are full myHack packs for the Latitude D430. The packs do not require any subsequent EDP tuning at all, they provide everything required to obtain a fully working system (CPU power management, graphics, LAN, audio, keyboard, trackpad), non-OOB wireless, bluetooth and any other devices excluded of course.

	Some manual tuning is nevertheless required for proper sleep/wake operation: setting hibernation mode to plain old sleep and deleting any eventual sleep image file. This is done through the following Terminal commands upon final OS X installation:

sudo pmset hibernationmode 0
sudo rm -f /var/vm/sleepimage

	Vanilla support stops at Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 due to GMA950 support limitations. Mountain Lion 10.8 may be installed and tuned back to DP1 32bit operation through MLPF hack. Look at the Guides section for MLPF'ed ML guide. It's not 100% bug-free though...

After verifying that my current mSata drive worked in the adapter I ordered a Plextor 128GB M5M, partitioned it, and attempted to install Lion (I had SL on my Samsung HS122JC 5400 rpm spinner). I don't know what is going on with the myHack/OSXLatitude bootpacks but I've NEVER been able to make them work properly. My SL disk was created using a different method outlined in the D4xx forum. My Lion install kept hanging before getting to the logo...suggestions are welcome.

Anyway, I eventually gave up on Lion and installed SL, instead. I'm pleased to report that cold boot times dropped from 52 seconds to 32 seconds and my battery time (at 100% charge) increased from 1:35 to 2:52. I'm attaching some pictures for others to use as a roadmap.

So don't throw out that old D430 - just upgrade it to an mSata SSD. The beauty of this upgrade is that the SSD drive can be used later when you move on to a newer laptop.

Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if someone can help me get 10.6 installed on my D420, there is a good tutorial here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/178411-guide-boot-cd-d-series-latitudew-nvidia-or-gma950-and-intel-dual-core-retail-installs/?do=findComment&comment=1223592but it requires a DVD drive, I have tried to do what the CDs are doing with memory sticks but when I install the D620SLV1.iso to a memory stick and boot it it says it has no boot sector.

Could someone help,

I believe I initially did the install via SLD430USB.img... unfortunately I no longer have a copy of this file and the retail DVD I have doesn't seem to boot up properly via myHack or any other more modern methods... (I've tried about half a dozen different ways using a borrowed Macbook Pro that I have since had to return to my sister). The torrent for SLD430USB.img.bz2 that can be found via google has 1 or 2 seeds but I've been sitting at 0.1% complete for a day now. Does anyone know where I can obtain SLD430USB.img?

I've tried Kalyway 10.5.2 and a 10.6.3 retail image and the issue is the same either way.

I'm using the Dell Miniboot (chameleon, stolen and rebranded) 123 to start it.. Oh, and I've also just booted straight from the Kalyway DVD.

I manage to install it, and get it to run with various issues, WiFi, no LAN, no sound, etc -- but I've seen posts for that stuff so I'm sure I can get past all that.. The video issue is what is holding me up.. I can only get a good screen on an external monitor using the VGA port. If I hit F8, it whacks the screen out and looks like I'm trying to push it to a resolution that it can't handle which isn't the case, I've tried 640x480 and 1028x768 and the results are the same. I've also adjusted the refresh rate from 75 to 60.

When I hit F8 to go back to the external screen, the issue jumps to that screen to. I can only use it if I boot it to the external screen and leave it be. Video is kind of choppy too.

I'm downloading the iFail S3 v2 ISO right now though I don't know if this is going to help. It's going to take a day to get it at a whopping 50kB/sec so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone could point me in the right direction.

This D420 has the Intel 82945 chipset and the Dell WiFi card so I thought I was in good shape! For the record, the WiFi sees my network but says connection timeout when I enter the key. If I click cancel, it says it's connected but doesn't pull an IP address or subnet. If I manually assign it still doesn't work.

Thanks for any help! It seems to me this D420 might quell my lust for the AirBook I'll never be able to afford. LOL Hey, it's thin at least.

Since I am new here, I would like to thank all involved first. Great forum and great work! My kudos!

And now, I already need some help.

I have an d430 with 1.33GHz and 2GB of RAM, Broadcom WiFi etc.

I was following the "how to install..." tutorial and it went without a glitch. Graphics, Sound, WiFi, Bonjour, etc. - all fine.

I did the next step and downloaded and installed the EDP. I had some troubles recompiling the .mkext file until I found out that ./edptool.command was working only if Extra folder was on my HD (I keep booting from USB stick and didn't alter the SL installation). After realized my error I was able to recompile the .mkext file and didn't see any errors doing so.

After the reboot my keyboard and trackpad were lost. I needed to attach external USB keyboard/mouse combo to be able to do anything.

Since I thought the dsdt and kexts are optimized for 10.6.6 I successfully installed the combo update.

I could use my keyboard in Chameleon, to select my boot drive.

SL boots fine and I don't see any further issues (still didn't install fixes for heating, sleep or sound) except the missing keyboard/trackpad. But this one is crucial.

What did I do wrong? Where do I need to start fixing this issue?

I have 2 d430 laptops. One runs 10.6 and the other 10.7.5. The 10.7 runs lovely and I have installed from EDP and it runs fine and I am using it to post this.

I find the installs really difficult. First, the trackpad is very intermittent right from the start. It seems as though things freeze for a bit and then work again. The next thing is that when I assign a hard disk and load it, it gets to the end of loading OSX and then freezes. Sometimes I get to the point where it asks me for generic boot pack or I have boot pack.

I don't have the 10.7.4 boot pack, but have tried the 10.7.4 sent by herve this panics and I start again.

If install generic. Life is difficult because of the mouse and track pad problems. If I could cure this I could load in a Kext to get wifi working ( I have the broad com card in place). Would need to know which one if any one knows.

I can soldier on with the problem but it literally takes days to get anywhere with dodgy mouse to get wifi working. The wifi only works briefly for a second or two and then by the time I load in my wifi code, it has gone again. This is not easy to do with because the mouse issues.

I am using myhack, on on both 10.6 and 10.7 I get this install problem and obviously I have missed something.

I have made a Mavericks vostro 200 and I didn't have mouse issues and just loaded on a kext.

I have tried copying the 10.7 extra from my working 10.7.5 laptop but to no avail. (this gives you an idea of how much I know) but to use kext helper under the mouse conditions is tricky and hence I copied and pasted. I think the reason mouse may freeze is a graphics problem, being that the mouse and trackpad suffer exactly the same.

I must be doing something wrong some where.

I soldiered on with the first two and managed to struggle past the issues and get to EDP and do a build from here, but it took ages. Days.

If you use any technical terms not in this post, please explain them as I just won't know. If you say "install this", you will need to say how. etc. But hopefully someone can tell me right from the start how to solve the graphics or mouse problem, which starts right from loading from my hack install and choosing disk to install on.

Any help would be great.

	Last updated 13 May 2014
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

For those who would be interested, here are details to get & monitor native SpeedStep + stable Sleep/Wake on C2D Latitude D430 (tested on my U7700-based own model). The process consists of:

 replace existing FakeSMC kext (4.0 in most cases) with attached tuned-up version (based on Kozlek's 5.2.678 32/64bit)

 remove NullCPUPowerManagement + SleepEnabler + PState + CPUMonitor kexts

 remove PStateMenu utility

 keep VoodooTSCSync kext (this is critical or your laptop will run like a dead dog, thanks for the info Bronx Teck)

 activate CPU P-States & C-States generation at bootloader level

 use MacBook5,1 profile

 run HWMonitor tool to monitor CPU T° and frequency

	This basically makes use of MacBook5,1 SMBios and SMC value 1.32f8. Initially, MacBookAir3,1 (C2D SU9400 1.4GHz CPU) SMBIOS profile was used, but it turned out it was not supporting the full frequency range of the D430 CPU and it was not working under SL either. With MB5,1 profile, there is no issue at all.

1) EDP-based method:

 place attached FakeSMC kext in /Extra/include/Extensions

 modify Chameleon boot plist to select P & C states, then copy it + MB5,1 SMBios plist to /Extra/include

 do a System Build for Dell D430 with the following settings and reboot:

 in Kext/Drivers tab, select FakeSMC 5.x.xxx (Rehabman ...) / FakeSMC 6.x.xxx or whichever version is offered these days (it does not matter because EDP will not use that kext but the one you previously placed in /Extra/include/Extensions), the rest can be left as listed or changed according to your own wishes or needs

 in CPU & Power tab, set Install VoodooTSCsync to ON and all the rest to OFF

 in the other tabs, default options can be left as provided

	2) Manual method:

 place the attached tuned-up FakeSMC kext in /E/E, replacing any existing version

 delete any existing CPUMonitor / VoodooPState / NullCPUPowerManagement / SleepEnabler kexts from /E/E

 delete any existing PStateMenu plist from /Library/LaunchAgents

 place the attached MB5,1 SMBios plist in /Extra

 edit the boot plist with Chameleon Wizard to select P & C states generation, as pictured below

 run myFix (quick) and reboot

	After reboot, copy HWMonitor application to Applications folder then start it. Click on the HWMonitor menu bar icon, go to Preferences by clicking on the Gear icon in top right corner and select Start HWMonitor at login in General tab. Keep update checking turned off. You can then adjust/modify displayed information in Menubar tab through drag & drop of individual monitored components.

HWMonitor application is completely optional but very useful to monitor CPU T° and SpeedStep. Under Snow Leopard, use HWMonitor v2.3.20 as more recent versions are unsupported.

You'll know it works if you see fluctuation of CPU multiplier and frequency. For instance, on a U7700 CPU @1.33GHz with FSB 533MHz, you can expect the following steps:

 x6 -> 798MHz

 x7 -> 931MHz

 x8 -> 1.06GHz

 x9 -> 1.20GHz

 x10 -> 1.33GHz

	You should now enjoy native SpeedStep, lower CPU T° (?) and, probably, improved overall responsiveness. I do!

	Sleep & Wake will work properly and totally stable as long as a System password has been set in BIOS setup.

This was tested successfully under Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion 10.7.5 & ML 10.8.4/10.8.5 (MLPF).

PS1: This is totally similar to what was published in the article about native SpeedStep (with examples provided for D630 and D830). See here. The main difference here is that VoodooTSCsync must be retained with GM945 chipset. As such, this particular process also applies to D420, D520, D620 and D820 laptops for instance.
