[SOLVED] DELL Optiplex 7050 Micro i3 CPU hackintosh compatibility

Recommended Posts

Looking into acquiring a new 'nano Mac' kind of hackintosh on a budget. Had Intel NUCs in the past, but heard great things from @Bronxteck how he has recently bought a Dell 7050 microhttps://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/desktop-and-all-in-one-pcs/optiplex-7050-micro-desktop-computer/spd/optiplex-7050-micro ... in his case based on i5 CPU and running Mojave. Little out of my price range though. So was thinking about the same similar model but with an i3-6100T CPU -- *edit* in a micro ;)-- which can be held second hand for about 250EUR.

On older Optiplex systems there was no GPU hackintosh support for i3s. Is that different now as the 7050 model is using 7th gen Skylake architecture? According to https://ark.intel.com/products/90734/Intel-Core-i3-6100T-Processor-3M-Cache-3_20-GHz it has an Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU. Will that work with running High Sierra or Mojave ?

I have the optiplex 7050 SFF which is the bigger sibling to the micro version. mine has HD530 on an I-5 6600 cpu and it works so far natively in osx Mojave but I did have to run a grub SHELLterminal  command to set DVMT value to 160mb.

the micro 7050 uses laptop wifi combo BT card and can run a SATA drive or an M.2 SSD it also uses laptop ram DDR4 if I recall.

oh. Then I misunderstood and might explain my price research too. As an i5 in a micro instead of SFF is considerably more expensive logically.

Just did some quick googling again, and SFF with  better specs (double RAM, double SSD) and i5-7500 (CPUpassmark score: 8037 vs. i3-6100T: 4846pts) definitely justifies paying 500EUR for. Except then it would have a HD 630 GPU: https://ark.intel.com/products/97123/Intel-Core-i5-7500-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz . Would that work too?

*edit* And for 50EUR more (total of 550EUR) can even get a 7050 SFF model with:

*edit2* and just noticed I'm mixing up 6th gen (Skylake) with 7th gen (Kaby Lake) architecture.

Okay, 1st going to sort out which specs I'm going to get :) http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/OptiPlex-7050-Towers-Technical-Specifications.pdf

Yay! i3-6100T with 530GPU is 'fully supported' -- for what I'm going to use it for -- in HS through this guide:

Where I don't foresee problems in T vs. non-T model: http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/487/Intel_Core_i3_i3-6100_vs_Intel_Core_i3_i3-6100T.html ... even more so as found plenty of other confirmed hackintosh resources on youtube / other forums with lessons learned in prior post. So will be ordering a micro and post a guide soon. And play with Mojave too.

You can consider my compatibility request solved @Bronxteck . Thanks for clarifying ;)

my HDMI audio works fine on mojave. the machines have intel q270 chipset so they can do both kabbylake and Skylake cpu. normally mine would have come with the 7700 but they needed to run windows 7 so they opted for the 6600 for compatibility reasons.
