Inspiron e1705 (GMA 950) goes black before OS install screen

I am following the Snow Leopard procedure for the Inspiron 9400, which is supposed to be another name for the e1705 in North America.

Have Intel GMA 950 graphics, a Core Duo processor, A10 BIOS, and 2 Gig of RAM - and Snow Leopard 10.6.0 retail - and am making my myHack usb boot stick on a Mac running MtLion.

I get to a point where the screen goes briefly white, and then it goes black and I can't tell what is happening any more, aside from seeing activity on the usb stick for 15 seconds more. And additional 10 second activity if I hit return. And the same if I hit return after that. But then no more activity on the usb stick. No sound during any of this.

In truth, none of the other hackintosh install procedures I have tried have gotten past the screen going black -- aside from using iFail S3V2, which works without a hitch (except for broken sleep behavior unacceptable in a laptop).

UPDATE: I realize that the guide for iFail that worked was from this forum! Here:

https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/1392-how-to-mac-os-x-snow-leopard-on-dell-inspiron-e15056400/

I'm wondering if the tricks from this can be used to make MyHack+EDP directly usable.

But should the MyHack+EDP system be able to install on this Dell - or is the GMA 950 a no-go? (I only just chanced upon this forum today.) When I tried several weeks ago to use MyHack without EDP, I got similar results.

Many thanks!

Prior to upgrading the BIOS to A10 from A06 and upgrading RAM from 1 Gig to 2 Gig, the results of lspci run from Linux (which was temporarily installed) looked like this:

I have tried the following MyHack installer boot flags:

-v

-v -x

-v PciRoot=1

-v GraphicsEnabler=No

-v cpus=1

-v npci=0×2000

-v npci=0×3000

and multiple combinations of these. I have also set a system password in the BIOS, as that was recommended as a solution for some black screen sleep problems.

looks very similar in spec to the d620 gma. try the boot pack.

Just to be clear, are you suggesting to use the d620 bootpack instead of the inspiron 9400 bootpack?

Update: this seems to be working. Install of 10.6.0 proceeding OK so far.

Is there an explanation somewhere on how safely to apply the 10.6.8 combo update to this system?

Again, many thanks!

Install seemed to go OK, except I have no ethernet or internet.  Instructions said to post in forums to find out how to solve this, so here goes!

I have wired ethernet cable going to the Dell.  And this worked with my iFail install OK.

Can also try adding an Edimax EW-7811Un wifi dongle which also worked OK previously.  But would prefer to know the secret to getting the wired ethernet going.  Again, thanks!

Update: I used the wifi dongle to get internet connectivity and ran the EDP installer.  Haven't run the actual app, yet though, as I'm worried about which Dell model number to use.  Likely d620 gma, but it didn't give me wired ethernet on first install, so I'm wondering ...

Update2: after a second reboot since using the wifi dongle, I can no longer boot from the hard drive -- unless I use my MyHack usb stick to select the boot partition. If I select the boot partition when starting without the usb stick, the computer just sits with no HD activity.

Booting from the hard drive using -v I get

Loading Darwin 10.6

Loading kernel /mach_kernel

Read HFS+ file: [hd, 0,2)/mach_kernel] 4096 bytes

Read HFS+ file: [hd, 0,2)/mach_kernel] 7454537 bytes

and it stops there.

BIG PROGRESS!  Using MyHack+EDP stick is booted into partition on hard drive. Ran EDPtools from /Extra to fix things and now my e1705 boots from hard drive and MIRACLE ... SLEEP WORKS!

But I still don't have wired ethernet. Any tips there would be appreciated.   But SLEEP WORKS!  The laptop finally behaves like a laptop should when the lid is closed and the power unhooked.

Could you please open terminal and tick in; lspci -nn

Place the output here between [code.]tags. (without .)

When I run /Extra/bin/lspci -nn I get the message  "lspci: Cannot find any working access method."   I get the same message if I sudo su before running the command.   The general specs should be much the same as I posted in the first post of this thread, saved from when I ran lspci from Linux on this hardware before upgrading the RAM and BIOS.   If you can advise me on how to get the lspci command to work under the osxlatitude install, I would be grateful.   If necessary, I could use a live Linux distro again.  Thanks all, for your replies.   Update: From a linux live cd, the results of lspc -nn today are the same as listed above, with the exception that the final line above is gone, as I have turned off the builtin wireless in the BIOS.

Re: wired Ethernet, I guess Linux would have no reason to lie...

-> Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX [14e4:170c] (rev 02)

It may not be natively supported by 10.6.0, but I think it is with 10.6.3. Try the attached kext in /Extra/Extensions to test. Run myFix(full) before reboot.

Thank your for that kext.  I installed it and ran full myfix -t /Volumes/MacHD and rebooted.  Using DHCP I get a self-assigned IP address starting with 169.254.x.xxx and cannot connect to my router. The Status is "Connected" but with Orange dot.  If I manually configure the IP numbers I get a Green dot, but still can't connect to my router.  If I boot with a linux live cd, I connect OK to my router and the internet - so my hardware and wiring seem to be OK.  As I mentioned at the end of my other thread on this topic, my other (iFail) partition no longer connects to the ethernet if I use the osxlatitude bootloader system, but it does connect OK if I select that partition using an iboot (chameleon, stolen and rebranded) CD.

I should note that I am successfully running 10.6.8 - although my install started from 10.6.0.  Only wired ethernet is an issue at the moment. I have ordered a Broadcom 1505 wireless card, but it has not arrived yet and that may or may not be another issue/challenge.
