ML on Dell Optiplex 745 mini tower

I have been trying to install ML onto my dell opt 745 mini tower forever long without any success and wondering if anyone can help me.

System Specs:

-  dell optiplex 745 mini tower

-  motherboard ORF703, socket 775LLGA, Intel chipset Q965 (ICH8/R)

-  CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 @ 2.13GHz

-  8GB DDR2 RAM

-  Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller

-  AMD HD Audio

-  video card: original ATI Radeon HD4650, swapped with Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT (from another system that already running ML) and recently purchased Nvidia Geforce 640 GT for better compatibility with ML

History......

-  Dual boot windows 7 + iFail L2 (manually updated to 10.7.5) on an SSD

-  tried MANY guides (tonycrapx86 unifail & xfail, Niresh, iFail ML2, insanelymac, myhack and Sereivathanak Mao to install ML - via USB stick or HDD partition) onto a separate HDD others than the dual boot SSD

-  BIOS set to Legacy mode and Reporting OFF

-  used ML 10.8 or 10.8.2 InstallESD.dmg or .app in Applications

-  tried with just USB installer and a singe HDD, tried with all HDDs/SSD enabled, tried different HDDs......

-  used different bootloaders and different boot flags (-v, -f, -F. -x, GraphicsEnabler=No/Yes, cpus=1, PCIRootUID=0/1, PCIRoot=0/1, npci=0x2000/3000, UseKernelCache=No, )

-  tried to update from Lion to ML

-  formatted both USB and installing HDD with either MBR or GUID

End Results (regardless of which guide)..........ALL THE SAME!!!!

-  CONTINOUS reboots as soon as some kexts are loaded after chameleon bootloader and NEVER able to get to the installer screen

-  few occasions, KP at 'uptime in nanoseconds'

I KNOW that it's possible because I've read threads that said have been done.  I'ver tried those exact methods that worked for other dell optiplex 745 mini towers but I still have THE SAME results, REBOOTS!!!!

Anyone has any ideas?  Anyone can shed some lights?

much appreciated if anyone can help me.

If you need further infos, please ask.

Thank you in advance.

As a general rule, you should avoid distros like iFail. You never entirely know what they contain. myHack + OSXL bootpack should definetely work as it is a system supported in EDP; so yes, we've tried it and installation was successful.

Reboot is a typical indication of incompatibility with CPUPowerManagement (Apple or Null) and/or incorrect P states settings in Chameleon boot plist. However, the OSXL bootpack should take care of that. If not, you can always try to boot with option: "GeneratePStates=No".

Thank you so much for responding.

I was desperate to get ML installed, so I tried just about any guides/methods to get it done but nothing is done.

What would you recommend me try?

Is there an optiplex 745 OSXL bootpack for ML and how do I apply that to myhack USB installer?

Or should I just use generatepstates=no for no with my USB installer? I do not think I can set up generatepstates in bios 2.6.6

Thanks

Katie

Hello Katie,

Using OSX Latitudes Guides with a MyHack Installer + EDP I have never had much of an issue ever.

Download the Bootpack here :

http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/compatibility/

Create your MyHack USB Installer here:

http://myhack.sojugarden.com/guide/

And when your done run EDP and pick your build :

http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/download/

This site has all the guides located on the main page

http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/documentation/pre-installation/

Best of luck!

I checked the compatibility page, there is no Mountian Lion bootpack for dell optiplex 745, unless I can use the lion bootpack.

Thanx

My apologies, it looks like I spoke too soon in my earlier message and without re-checking the Compatibility page. By all means, try the Lion bootpack.

If you don't success at all, then it may prove a lost cause and Lion could be where the buck stops. But I just can't remember if anyone managed to get ML installed. I think so, but search the forum. Once you've created your myHack USB installer, re-run myHack and choose Add Extra, pointing to the Lion bootpack that you'll have downloaded just before.

I will definitely try lion bootpack w ML installer.

I have read that it is possible to install ML but when I tried the exact same method, did not work for me.

Update.....

so, I prepared as guide:

- prepare Mountain Lion usb installer with myhack

- install OSXLatitude Lion EDP /extra folder for dell optiplex 745 to myhack usb installer

- boot up with usb installer

- at bootloader, select myhack os x usb

- right off the bat, got an error saying something like "Mach- O file has bad magic number" then it reboots and back to the bootloader screen

not sure what that means, was it because I installed a Lion EDP onto a Mountain Lion USB installer?

updating....

after googling, someone suggested to delete arch=i386 from org.chameleon.boot.plist.  I did that and it booted ok then........REBOOTS!

the screen scrolled so fast i couldn't read what it said before rebooting.  I saw a bunch of UHCI controller......something and something 'legacy'......but couldn't catch the last line before reboots?????

If it means anything I really see almost no diff between Lion and ML, Just minor changes.

I'm so hard pressed to get ML installed is because I have an Orico USB 3 card that works natively with ML 10.8.2, but not on Lion.

2ndly, there have been threads reporting that ML can be installed on dell 745 mini tower but when I tried, no success.

Unless, there is a 3rd party kext to work for USB 3 Fresco Logic chipset that would work for Lion.

thanx.
