Have you tried entering, on the chameleon boot command line, PCIRoot=1  ?

I have noticed for a long time that you sometimes have to boot the USB key on nVidia D820 (and D830/M4300, for that matter) multiple times before you get a display.  Once EDP is installed and a build is done this behavior stops; but I see it on the USB keys for Lion on D820 and D830/M4300 and for ML and Mav on D830/M4300.  And, for virtually every install I've done recently, the first boot after install but before EDP install will do the black screen thing.

When you get the black screen, wait a few minutes; if it doesn't come up within say five minutes hard power off the box, and power it on again.  I've seen it take four boots before displaying the GUI, even with PCIRoot=1.
