e7440 Kernel Panic on boot with OCZ Trion SSD 480gb

Sorcerer

Recommended Posts

when booting with this SSD in the SATA bay, i get a KP every Boot. NOTE: it is being used as a second drive.. Still booting from the LITEON mSATA SSD..

Pull the drive out and system boots normally

plug the drive in after system has booted and all is OK (it's how i initialised and Formatted the Drive).. shut down and re-boot with drive still in and yup kernel panic..

Any clues ??

OCZ is part owned by Toshiba and Samsung.

here is the KP..  NOTE i can boot OK with CPUS=1 as well..

also the system does recognise the drive as you can see towards the end of the fault report.

Weird, it's the same KP as that experienced with VoodooPS2Controller v1.8.9. I don't believe your KP bears a direct link with the model of SSD. It's something else.

Since last loaded kexts is CoreStorage, can you check CS status of your drives (when both are in) with Terminal command:

diskutil list

Then, if there is a fusion/logical drive created, you may want to revert it to legacy mode

diskutil cs revert /dev/<disk name>

Checked.. The new SSD is listed as
#:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER[/size]
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *480.1 GB   disk2
   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk2s1
   2:                  Apple_HFS Work                    479.8 GB   disk2s2

the 120Gig mSATA is listed as
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *128.0 GB   disk0
   1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk0s1
   2:          Apple_CoreStorage System                  127.2 GB   disk0s2
   3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3

and yes it is weird it gives a SIMILAR KP to the VoodooPS2Controler.kext KP...

But it is replicable. soon as i boot with the new drive in i get a KP every time (unless i boot with CPUS=1)  remove the drive and it all works normally.. (with exception to sleep and HDMI Audio)..

starting to think something may be amiss in the DSDT also note a strange issue with USB drives..  for some reason they keep disconnecting then re-connecting.  (i get the drive was not ejected properly error popups every now and then) most notable when performing time machine backups.

well i guess this SSD is not compatible at least during boot..

Thought i would try see if i can install OSX as a fresh install. No good.

Installations gets to second stage and freezes, no errors listed. And this is the SAME USB install i used to install on this laptop with the LITEONIT drive. So i know the Install USB works.

Maybe an additional kext is needed for this drive.. I do not know.

Can anyone advise?

ok latest firmware is from September last year.. only purchased this drive new this week. so whilst it is possible it may be Old stock and have old firmware, it is unlikely... however i will download the management tool and check it anyway..

it does say that it has compatibility issues with MacBooks with Nvidia chipsets.. do not think that would apply to a pc with only Intel chips.. so it should function just fine at least on a RealMac.
