if you are using a patched kernel like for chameleon you will need to re patch the new one from the 10.12.4 update. if it's clover your booting from then try repair the disk using disc utility from usb os installer or recovery. Herve has some listed here

No need of a patched kernel on IvyBridge platforms; you only need the AICPUPM patch.

If you use Clover, no particular reason why your E6530 would hang post-update.

If you use Enoch, things are a little different since you need to re-patch the vanilla AICPUPM kext installed by the upgrade. Provided you kept NullCPUPM kext in /E/E and run a recent version of Enoch such as r2848, you should be able to boot with option & flag: -f KernelBooter_kexts=Yes.

Add -v flag to boot in verbose mode and see where the laptop hangs.

I had -v in config.sys already...

We had a whole slew of text, then the apple logo appears, and the progress bar does not complete...

Tried without -v

We got an apple logo with progress bar that does not complete...

Was going to do a clean install and use system migrator to transfer my information...

DOES it make a difference if you use the combo update vs software update...

I have used both methods for a while...
