  1. So I have done a clean install of Lion on my D520. Used MyHack method with extra from this site.

Running EDP 2.1, I ended up with a functional system, but I still had no ethernet as was the case with snow leopard.

I then removed the dsdt, reduced the /Extra/Extensions Kexts to a minimum (FakeSMC, etc.)

Booting, the system with the default of 32 bit was not good. It came up with a dark screen - I believe it booted, but did not have any video display. However, booting in 64 bit was more successful - though I had no keyboard or trackpad. Using USB Mouse and Keyboard allowed me to mess around with the system. I also had an ethernet connection AND a wifi connection. So that was in some ways an improvement.

There is a package on kexts.com for 32 bit 64 bit ps/2 keyboard and track http://www.kexts.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=1448. Installed these and away I went, trackpad, keyboard, sound installed fine - all in 64 bit. Sleep does not work, but that's not a biggy for me since I have specific uses for this machine that do not involve sleep.

I dumped the DSDT (A05 bios), cleaned it up, patched it for GMA950. It seems to work ok on the system though I do not know how I would tell how well it is working.

Updates on Lion have gone very well. Not an issue. Hope this helps someone.

  2. So I have been doing some experimenting...

    1) Installed another partition of OSX 10.6 no updates.

1A)Without running EDP - No LAN.

    1B) Running EDP 1.8 - No LAN.

    1C) Kernel flag maxmem=1024 - No LAN

    1D) kernel flag max_valid_dma_addr=1024 - No LAN

1E) Downgraded bios to A05 - No LAN in either 10.6.0 or 10.6.7.

The thing knows it has a connection, but WILL not get an IP. Even manually setting up an IP and having the router have a static route, it will not communicate. Works fine in Win 7 or Ubuntu.

I feel like there is some obvious thing that I have not thought of and I am missing. This is getting me angry.

  3. Hi,

I tried several things: 1) Removing the BCM4401 kext from extra/extensions, running edptool and update and reboot (turn off really). The reinstall BCM4401 kext and update and reboot. Result No change.

    2) added the kernel flag as suggested Ddd max_valid_dma_addr=1024. That produced no change either.

It senses the presence of a ethernet connect, but will not connect.

  4. I took the plunge last night and fired up a Live Ubuntu CD and rebranded my BCM4312 card to an AirPort card.

Results were amazing! I'm finally able to get Wireless N speeds without having the WLAN card drop out of working existence and not function until I reboot. If I had the router in "N" mode, I could surf the web for about 30 seconds on my BCM4312 card before it went stupid and stopped working. If I left it in "G" mode, I never had a problem.

Problem I'm running into is that now in Backtrack 4, I can no longer use the b43 module to test wireless penetration. (Its cool. I have an Intel 2200/B/G/N card that works great for that!) Card works great for Windows though. No issues at all. Still detected as a BCM4321!

But, having OS X pickup my wireless N router and achieve N speeds is going to make me completely forget about not having working LAN lol.

Well the n does sound great. I like it on my windows laptop. The D520 was sitting on my office desk collecting dust so now it is perhaps used a little more.

Regarding the LAN, I am not so convinced that it is an issue with installing OSX as an issue with OSX. The web seems to abound by Mac users complaining of this issue with no real solution in sight. I am just hoping that the problem will one day cure itself.

Ive tried booting in safe mode, booting with 1 cpu, playing with various forms of the BCM440x kext,

Can someone tell me how to remove drivers and then have the computer rediscover the card?

  5. Probably not. I'm not too concerned with the LAN being broken. I rarely use it, honestly. But I'd like to have it working for others that have the BCM4401 and don't have a compatible wireless card, or do not have the means to get one. (They're destitue, cards are unavailable in their region, etc..)

I did find that 10.6.3 was the last version of OS X Snow Leopard that would let me BCM4401 work properly. Anything past that, and the card becomes ignorant.

(Also, anyone else notice that when you adjust the display brightness on their Latitude, the on-screen bezel doesn't display in OS X? Yet, when I push the "Pause" key, it attempts to adjust the display brightness and shows the bezel, however it doesn't actually adjust the brightness. It tries to increase the brightness, but wont. I haven't found a key for dim brightness lol.)

The pause key does say it is increasing the brightness, but nothing happens! Guess that does not bother me. And honestly, for most things the wifi is fine. But when downloading a larger file - i'd rather have the ethernet.

  6. Try using my BCM440X.kext. Drop it into /Extra/Extensions, then when OS X asks you if you would like to copy/replace, say yes. Then fire up EDP and do selection 1, followed by a new build using current extensions. I believe the option is "A".

Yup, after checking, its selection 1, followed by option "A". You'll see option "A" at the bottom of the EDP Terminal window. It says "Perform new build using existing kexts".

If my BCM440X kext doesn't work, I'm not sure what else to try. I used to have this problem in Leopard, and sometimes reinstalling OS X would fix the issue. (I have no clue what ethernet card my D520 has, honestly.)

Tried it, but it did not work. Same issue as before. Really frustrating. It is simply not able to get an IP address (I think).

  7. I have a relatively plain D520 - 2G ram, 160G HD, Bios A08.

Everything installed well, I updated to 10.6.7, I have wifi, I used the EDPTool 1.8 (great tool!) and the system seems to work really well.

Except for the Ethernet. If I have no cable, it says so. If I plug in a cable, it knows there is a cable but it never will get an ip and self assigns the ip. I can do nothing with it.

The lan card is a broadcom 4401. It shows up in the system profile. I have tried max_valid_dma_addr=1024 as a kernel flag. Nothing works.

Any suggestions on how to fix this really annoying issue?

    Thanks,

    M
