1. Dont install 10.8, since you have not QE/CI support (accelrated graphics), ML will suck extra much.. go for Lion or SL
2. seems you need IOATAFamily.kext to fix the "Waiting for root device"
Get it from here: IOATAFamily.kext.zip
Leon,
There are two issues here
1. when I tried to install 10.7 I got a BootCacheControl error (See earlier post). When you asked if it was lion or mountain lion I ASSuMEd I should try 10.8, so I did like a noob.
2. When I tried to install 10.8 I got the 'still waiting for root' error. I have not tried your fix because you told me not to install 10.8.
I can not find a fix for the BootCache error. I thought I needed the 'bootcache.playlist.kext' but I am having trouble finding it online.
Thanks for you patients with a noob

I am not giving!! I am pretty sure it is possible to install OSX on this machine. I have been looking online and have found there are other methods to install "unifail, iboot (chameleon, stolen and rebranded), and with a 10.6.6 disk. Should I attempt another method or continue trying to resolve the 'Still waiting for root issue"? I do not know which would be best.

try npci0x2000 pciRoot=1 -f -v flags at chameleon boot
Tried and got error Can't find /npci0x2000

Have tried everything I can find to fix the "still wait for root device" error.
The hard drive currently has a windows vista installed. I want install over it but it is not working. Does the hard drive need to be reformatted for mac (journaled?) before I can install on it?

Ok so I stayed up late tonight and made a new USB installer with OSX10.8. I tried to install and got a gray circle with a line. Booted with -v and got Still waiting for root device. I then googled the error and found this is a common problem. I used the disk utility to identify the disk type (disk2s1). Booted with rd=disk2s1. same error. Then tried several variation disk2, disk1, disk3s1, and so on still. no luck. Tried to boot with npci=0x2000, npci=0x3000, and UseKernelCache=No, same error.
The hard drive is sata and I can not change the settings in the bios
Things from google I did not try because I do not know how:
Install ML.
replace the AppleACPIPlatform and IOPCI Family
remove orangeiconfix.kext
change the install location
Please help

Ok so it has been a few days and I have tried a few things I found from a quick Google search of the error above. From the searches it seems the issue is related to a kext that I am missing. At this point I am not sure where to go. I think I will try to install mountain lion instead of lion as the previous post seems to indicate it makes a difference. If anyone know how to fix the error I am having your imput is welcomed t
Thanks

I booted with -v and the last line says:
BootCacheControl ; Unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist ; 2 No such file or directory
Bug: launchctl.c:2400 (24957) :30: (dbfd = open (g_job_overrides_db_path, O_RDONLY | O_EXLOCK | O_CREAT, S_IRUSR| S_IWUSR)) !=1
Note: after -v keyboard works

I start the machine press F10 to select the USB drive and press enter. Then the gray apple logo appears with a spinning gear below it. Let is sit for almost an hour. Still nothing. What should I do?

First of all, you might have to do some heavy DSDT editing, second of all you deffently need to dump lspci - with that you have little idea of hw addresses etc.
But its all here.. so try it out: http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/pre-installation/
I have completed the myHack steps for creating the USB installer (1-2), should I continue to step 3 listed at (http:myHack.sojugarden.com/guide/) or should I add the boot pack from the osxlatitude site. If I need the boot pack, how do I know which one the website does not have any Gateway machines listed. Additionally, if I need a custom boot pack how do I make it?
Thanks for the help

Thanks for the good news!!
Cake with out icing is still cake.
I would like to install OSX on this machine, if it will be stable. BTW- it does not have to be Lion. Whatever OSX version is best for the machine is ok. How do I install?
Thanks again for the help!!

I am a newbie. I have a spare gateway md7818u laptop that i would love to install osx lion on. I have done some research and think it is possible, but I am not sure how. Is there a step by step tutorial for the install? The machine currently has vista installed. My end goal is to have a dual boot for osx and windows. Please help!!
The machine has an intel core 2 duo, 4gb of ram, and a 50gb harddrive.

No, I have tried every combination of -x, -f, -F, -V, all with -v and got the same error. My determination is dwindling . I am beginning to think window or linux is a better option.
