  1. Sorry Hervé, I'm a regular Unix guy with no real insights in the inner workings of EDP. Running myfix was unknown to me until post #18 :-S

Bringing the machine up with your /Extra was better this time (I notice a new splash screen, a "chromish" apple instead of the previous OSXlatitude logo) and I have keyboard. I still don't have full network though - System Settings say Ethernet is connected but I have no route to remote hosts, even if I enter IP settings manually.

I'm travelling for a week now so I will return to try to fix this when I get back. I hope I'll meet you here on the forums again then :-)

Thanks for all the help so far

    Mike

  2. But... you're back with nullCPUPowerManagement, PState, SleepEnabler, etc. all those I advised you not to select!  I recommended you use VoodooBattery and you have AppleSmartBatteryManager + VoodooBattery!  :? You're without PS2 kexts, so keyboard and touchpad aren't probably working... Same goes for LAN, you have no Broadcom kext installed.

Sorry, but either you're not following instructions or EDP is completely & utterly messed up. Your D430 just won't work properly in those conditions.

I entered the settings just like you wrote, so either the EDP installation is broken or the behaviour of EDP rev 679 is unexpected for both of us. Even to me as a layman the end result in /E/E doesn't look like it corresponds much to what I entered. F ex, could I even make EDP settings to get several different battery kexts installed?

I noticed that EDPweb listed the myHack keyboard driver you recommended as 64-bit, and you warned me about 64-bit, could this have something to do with things?

Why won't you just use the /Extra I provided above ???

Manually remove all those kexts, copy those from my /Extra folder to your /E/E, copy my SMBIOS + boot plists to /Extra then run my fix (quick).

Yes, if it is feasible to hack this manually I think it would be the best. I did try your Extra folder back in post 4 without any improvements (but lost keyboard). But then I just replaced the folder without running myfix, is that the important part?

Here's the current contents of my /Extra folder:

    cp /Extra.herve/org.chameleon.Boot.plist /Extra
    cp /Extra.herve/smbios.plist /Extra
    myfix -t "/Volumes/Mac OS X Lion" -q
    (reboot)

    Thanks :-)

    Mike

  3. The contents of /Extra/Extensions after the build I just did on rev 679 (which is the only kind of build I can do without network) is:

    AppleACPIBatteryManager.ext
    AppleACPIPlatform.kext
    AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext
    AppleSmartBatteryManager.kext
    AppleSmartBatteryManager2.kext
    FakeSMC.kext
    NullCPUPowerManagement.kext
    Patched_10.7_AppleRTC.kext
    SleepEnabler.kext
    VoodooBattery.kext
    VoodooPState.kext
    VoodooTSCSync.kext
    lspcidrv.kext

(I typed this list manually so there may be typos)

  4. Ok, so still not really there yet but now I boot without delay to graphical desktop. I had to use the existing EDP rev 679 as I didn't manage to get networking running. After doing the steps from previous posts I have the following remaining problems:

    • keyboard and trackpad doesn't work (but I can use a USB keyboard/mouse)
    • network isn't working (system settings say cable is disconnected but it's not)

Should I change the procedure somehow considering I'm running rev 679, so I can update to latest and then do it all over again?

  5. Ok, so to confirm I will do take these files from your /Extra:

    /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist

    /Extra/smbios.plist

    /Extra/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext

    to my:

    /Extra/include/org.chameleon.Boot.plist

    /Extra/include/smbios.plist

    /Extra/include/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext

    and then run EDPWeb.

I can see that GMA950 brightness fix is already selected,

Does it all look good? (crossing fingers :-)

  6. Great, looking forward to hearing from you later then :-)

Your view on updates is very interesting to know more about. I have tried to stay up-to-date with new EDP versions thinking that it will improve over time. Usually I have done EDP update + build after every Apple Program Update, even if just iTunes is updated. But are you saying it is better not to update+build EDP?

Having native SpeedStep sounds good. But these tweaks are not achievable through EDP settings and have to be manually added? Is there a list of interesting manual tweaks somewhere?

    Thanks for all help
    Mike

  7. I will certainly not reboot until I feel as safe as I can :-S

    Yes, BIOS is A09.

Default build options may be wrong you say? Very interesting - maybe this is what started the problems in the first place. As every time before I just accepted the defaults when doing the update that gave me the problems.

I'm not fluent in what options are important. Could you help me and point out which ones could need tweaking?

    Best regards

    Mike

I've managed to get back into the graphical desktop by:

    1. Copying the /Extra folder from another D430 I have access to
    2. Choosing the Boot Ignore Caches option on the boot splash screen
    3. Waiting about an hour while laptop showing black screen and sporadic disk activity
    4. Pressing a key to light up the screen

So what is best to do now? Remove /Extra and /Applications/EDP.app and then do a new install+build of EDP?

  9. An update made my EDP build unbootable. I can still log in to single-user mode with a text-mode console. The problems may be related to EDP directory changes so I'd like to start over from scratch, wipe out the current fixes, and install a fresh EDP.

How to clean out old EDP?

Is is enough to wipe everything in

    /Extra

    /Applications/EDP.app

    ?

    How to install new EDP?

I have transferred the latest Install_EDP to the machine using a USB stick, but the installation uses the graphical desktop (Window Server) so nu luck there.

How can I install EDP from the command line?

    How to run the build?

After installation I will need to run the build with recommended settings for my system. In the old EDP this was console/script-based but this is now web-based.

Can I still call on the build from the command line somehow?

    Thanks

    Mike Wilson

  10. Ok, so I have keyboard access again and have transferred Install_EDP to the laptop through a USB stick.

When I try to run the install from the command line in single-user mode (text console, no graphic desktop) it complains about missing Window Server, as expected.

So how can I update EDP in this stage?

(Is it possible to trigger a headless EDP install?)

  11. I replaced my /Extra folder entirely with yours, but same thing happens and bootup hangs on the same place. I also tried an Extra.backup folder I found on my system with the same result.

Is your belief that the system is hanging on what is about to be logged, or on what has just been logged? I've seen forum mentions about "failed to locate SMC driver" that suggest to install FakeSMC. Do you think this is relevant?

    Best regards

    Mike

  12. I gave up waiting and did a verbose boot. The last two log messages are:

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::registerLPCDriver - failed to locate SMC driver

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::registerLPCDriver - WARNING - LPC device initialization failed: C-state power management not initialized

I can boot into single-user mode.

Anything I can do here on the command line to fix the problem?

  13. As I've had some problems with crashes at boot and wakeup I decided to update to "latest" on my D430. It's on OSX 10.7.5 and I updated to latest EDP rev 679 and ran a default build for D430. For extra cleanliness I also executed the "touch kernel extensions" fix.

After rebooting it has so far spent four hours on the startup screen with the OSXLATITUDE apple above a spinner. I don't see any disk activity.

    Is this expected?

Can I do something to get it running?

    Thanks

    Mike

  14. Success! After updating EDP + Chameleon and downloading Chameleon Wizard the AppStore started working, so I didn't have to do anything more!

Sleep is also working nicely now, and after looking through the instructions I realize that both your instructions and the tweak guide is about disabling hibernate, just with different commands.

    Thanks for all help :-)

  15. 1) No, just run EDP, go to Fixes menu and simply choose Disable Hibernation

Thanks - I was still seeing crashes on Resume so this will probably fix it!

    2) Only if you encounter the problem, if not, leave it

I can't download from AppStore so I'm assuming this is what needs to be fixed. Will try once I get Chameleon Wizard.

    3) Again, just run EDP, go to the Installer menu and choose Install Chameleon. Run the package and install on your OS X partition/HDD (it's downloaded to "/download" folder).

Isn't Chameleon already installed on my system after following the osxlatitude/myhack installation? (I thought it's the "boot screen" program?)

Then, I'd advise you to download a tool called Chameleon Wizard and copy it to Applications folder. Run it and update to latest Chameleon version through Dropbox in Installation tab.

Right, so Chameleon Wizard is not (no longer?) included in EDP.

Is this the official download location for it? :

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7085278/Chameleon_Installer/download.html

    (redirecting to http://cl.ly/Ei7w)

  16. Great, thanks!

There's a couple of remining things I'd like to check with you experts:

    1) Sleep

Herve, you mentioned above that I should configure the BIOS password to solve sleep issues. Does that mean I don't have to do the other instructions linked from the site heading:

    Tweaks > Dell > Sleep & Standby

    ?

    2) Fixing AppStore

    Are the instructions at

    Tweaks > Fix AppStore

    valid for Lion on D430?

    3) Chameleon Wizard

To do (2) I'd like to run Chameleon Wizard and I see mentions that it's bundled in EDP, but I don't see it there. How should i access it?

    Thanks :-)

    Mike
