Hmmm - well I did try Ukulele before, but I didn't use a Logitech layout so I will give that another go. Any ideas about why my laptop won't sleep given the information I posted above? I forgot to mention my settings under "System Preferences -> Energy Saver". Under "Power Adapter" Computer Sleep = 1Hr Display Sleep = 15 Min Put the hard disks to sleep = TRUE Wake for network access = FALSE Start up Auto after power failure = FALSE restart automatically if the computer freezes = FALSE And under "Battery" Computer Sleep = 1Hr Display Sleep = 15 Min Put the hard disks to sleep = TRUE Slightly dim display = TRUE Auto reduce brightness before sleep = TRUE Restart Automatically if the computer freezes = FALSE

About the keyboard: What I currently have is serviceable, if suboptimal. That said, I am certainly up for trying to improve the situation. It doesn't look like I am using the VoodooPS2Controller - at least it is not in my /Extra directory. Basically, if it wasn't included in the D630 lion fullpack then I don't have it - my hackintosh-foo is not high yet to have done anything like mixing and matching kext files . I've posted the contents of my /Extra directory below. Should I consider switching to the VoodooPS2Controller? I have an ANSI layout, but are there other benefits to the Voodoo version? Based on the install instructions at https://github.com/RehabMan/OS-X-Voodoo-PS2-Controller/wiki/How-to-InstallIt looks like it would replace my ApplePS2Controller.kext and AppliceACPIPS2Nub.kext files. It also mentions something very specific about "RehabMan's branch of kozlek's FakeSMC" for ProBook users - I understand what software branches are but I don't understand the significance of this or if it would also apply to someone with a D830. For Sleep: I'm not sure what you mean by check the "hibernation mode", but I've re-run following commands sudo pmset hibernatemode 0 sudo touch /var/vm/sleepimage sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage One thing I should point out is that on that same page the first step is to check "use secure virtual memory" under "Preferences Panel > Security > General " - but I don't have that option. I'm guessing it was something in SL that isn't in Lion? Unless by "Preferences Panel" they didn't "System Preferences" in which case I don't know what they are talking about. With regard to the performance tuning with fakesmc - I'm afraid I'm rather lost as to what I'm supposed to do. I'm pretty sure that I don't have CPUMonitor, NullCPUPowerManagement,VoodooPState, VoodooTStateSync, or SleepEnabler kexts because they are not in my /Extras. I do have SpeedStep enabled in bios. My FakeSMC's Info.plist says it is version 5.2.678 and it has a "Plugins" directory with "ACPISensors", "CPUSensors", "GPUSensors", and "LPCSensors" inside it. My /Extra/smbios.plist has the Model Number set to MacBook(5,1) I don't know what "SMC compatible -> use "smc-mcp"" means or what I'm supposed to do. I don't know what "Native SpeedStep fully supported through entire cpu speed range" means - is this a setting I should be checking? Same for "Native Sleep/Wake…" and "X3100 monitoring…" - are these settings I should be checking or just telling me what should be supported? Just in case I've inadvertently answered your question about having certain things in place, I've gone ahead and attached my DSDT file. /Extra /Extra/Extensions/ /Extra/Extensions/AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/AppleACPIPlatform.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/ApplePS2Controller.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/BCM5722D.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/FakeSMC.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/FakeSTAC9205.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/ Patched_10.7_AppleRTC.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/VoodooBattery.kext/ /Extra/Extensions/lspcidrv.kext/ /Extra/RemovedExtensions/AppleGraphicsControl.kext/ /Extra/RemovedExtensions/AppleTyMCEDriver.kext/ /Extra/RemovedExtensions/AppleUpstreamUserClient.kext/ /Extra/Themes/.… /Extra/dsdt.aml /Extra/modules/ /Extra/modules/FileNVRAM.dylib /Extra/modules/Resolution.dylib /Extra/nvram.44454c4c-5600-104b-8043-b9c04f314431.plist /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist* /Extra/smbios.plist* Thanks for your help! Also - is the paypal to [email protected] method still a good way to donate?

Sorry it has been awhile since I have posted. I ran into a problem where the ~` key registered as §± instead. For most people this probably is not a huge deal, but as a programmer and also someone who uses latex on a daily basis not having that key was painful. I tried Ukelele after reading about it on https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/700-on-d430-133-no-tilde-key-%C2%A7%C2%B1-instead/?hl=tildeand http://www.osxlatitude.com/remapping-keys-in-osx/, but it didn't work. Eventually I stumbled across this https://github.com/tekezo/Karabiner/issues/82. I installed and configured KeyRemap4MacBook and that did the trick! It took me a bit to figure out how to get it configured, so in case anyone else is wondering all you need to do is go to the "misc&uninstall" tab, click "Open private.xml", open the file and paste the following into it. <?xml version="1.0"?> <root> <item> <name>Fix Tilde</name> <identifier>private.fix_tilde</identifier> <autogen>--KeyToKey-- KeyCode::UK_SECTION, KeyCode::BACKQUOTE</autogen> </item> </root> I could never get the atheros wireless card to work. I'm not sure why. I ended up buying a dell broadcom wireless card that was on your list as being compatible, installed it and it works perfectly. Doesn't to 5Ghz or have bluetooth, but neither of those are deal breakers for me. I upgraded my memory from 2GB to 4GB and that has helped a lot with the performance. I also bought a new battery since the one that came with the computer has long since died. The cheap battery I bought is already dead, next time I will spend more then $15. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good source for quality d830 batteries? The issue I'm currently fighting with is getting the machine to sleep - or rather getting the machine to stay asleep. I ran the commands to disable hibernate, and now the computer will go into sleep but it wakes up again immediately. I don't think I'm using the NullCPUPowerManagement, or at least it is not in my /Extras directory. I have "wake from usb" and "wake from lan" both disabled in BIOS, as well as the modem, parallel port, and serial port. Seems like a similar problem to https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/971-d830intel-lion-instability-when-upgrading/?hl=sleep, but I don't know if that was ever resolved. It sounds like at least one person has tried removing AppleACPIPlatform.kext that is in S/L/E, but that was the fix for 10.9.2 and I'm running 10.7.5 so I don't know if that is advisable (https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/6311-d830-nvidia-1092-broke-sleep-any-fix-or-downgrade/?hl=sleep). I tried running myHack's full version of myFix just for good measure. Any suggestions for fixing sleep?

Ok, so there seems to be a few remaining problems. Something is not happy with power management. The computer will not go to "sleep" and "wake" up properly. Closing the lid causes the computer to turn off, but opening the lid does nothing. Instead, after going to "sleep" you have to press the power button and the computer cold boots (with some errors). That is, the dell logo shows up, you have to press F1, you see the OSXLatitude boot screen, then the white apple screen, etc. Additionally, the controls in preference panel about how long to wait before putting the screen and computer to sleep don't seem to have much effect. I set the computer to never go to sleep while on the charger (due to the previously mentioned problem), but sometime during the middle of the night it turned off anyways. Also, I have set the screen to not turn off for 30 minutes, but it turns off (not just goes dim) much earlier. I found this page (http://www.osxlatitude.com/getting-osx-sleep-to-work-on-your-dell-latitude/) but have not yet tried it's suggestions. Is this still relevant/recommended? What is the purpose of creating and then removing /var/vm/sleepimage? On the D630 Fullpacks thread they suggest running the following commands for Chameleon based installations: sudo chmod -R 755 /Library/Extensions sudo chown -R 0:0 /Library/Extensions sudo touch /Library/Extensions sudo kextcache -Boot -U / I have not yet done this as I was not sure if it applied to the D8xx and things seemed to be working ok. Is this necessary / would this help fix the issue? Would it hurt to try? Finally, sometimes after booting the mouse input gets all confused. It will work fine at the password screen, but afterwords both the trackpad and mouse will become extremely jumpy and the buttons won't work correctly. Restarting the computer seems to fix the problem, at least for a few more reboots until it happens again. I'd appreciate any advice I could get!

Excellent - thanks for the advice! I did the update and ran myHack/myFix as you suggested and everything went smoothly. I'm testing things now to see if I run into any issues, but thank you so much to Herve (especially) and Jake Lo for all your help! I need to wait until my next paycheck, but I plan to donate to you guys and support this effort!

barbecue started following Help with installing Lion on D830
-
It looks like the Install ESD I used was for 10.7.2. I would like to update to 10.7.5 - Is there a safe way to do this? Can this be accomplished using the auto update or combo updater? Also, will I need to use myHack to reinstall chameleon or extras after the update? Thanks
-
Success! Winning formula so far... I used the D630 HiRes Lion Fullpack, but replaced its DSDT file with the one from the D830 bootpack on the compatibility page. I then dragged and dropped the directory onto the usb installer, booted the usb installer, and used myhack to "install extras" to the hard disk. Now my hard drive boots without needing safe mode, I have video, sound, ethernet, working mouse and keyboard.
-
Hmmmmm. So shortly after I posted my last response I realized that I had used the D630 Fullpack slightly differently from the way I had been using the D830 bootpacks. I had been putting the extras on the usb stick by running myHack, selecting the usb drive as a target, and selecting "install extras". Then I would select the extras folder I had downloaded and "install" them to the usb drive. Then I would plug the usb drive into the target machine, boot to it, and select "install extras" with the target being the local hard drive. This time, I wasn't paying attemtion and I simply dragged and dropped the Extras file onto the usb stick, then did the "install extras" on the target machine. That got me thinking that probably I should not have been "installing" the extras to the usb drive in the first place. So I just went back and tried the same procedure (drag and drop the extras) with the D830 LoRes bootpack. Using the D830 bootpack, I get past the verbose boot where I had previously been getting stuck - until the screen goes black (although I can tell the backlight is on). I have the WSXGA+ screen instead of the WXGA screen, so maybe that is related? At any rate, it seems likely that some combination of the two sets of files will work. Any suggestions on how to proceed from here?
-
ok - using the D630 HiRes full pack allowed me to boot from the HDD without needing safe mode. Now the problem seems to be with mouse input - neither the touchpad or a usb mouse I plugged in were working properly. With the usb mouse, the left click button did nothing - instead the scroll wheel was acting like a left click sometimes (but not always). The touchpad was behaving extremely erratically, i'm not even sure how I would describe it. Are there some kext files from the D830 bootpack that I can mix into the D630 fullpack to fix these problems?
-
I will give it a shot when I get home - do I use the full pack the same was as the bootpack?
-
Ok, BIOS updated to A15 using the dell bios recovery method... Just to document the process of what I did... I basically followed the instructions from https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/7691-problems-with-dell-d630-no-qe-ci-bios-a09/?hl=hdr&do=findComment&comment=47171 Still have the earlier problem where I can't boot normally though. But it seems like we are making progress!
-
Thanks for the tip about extracting the HDR file method of updating the bios. I will look into that. Using the usb stick, I booted the hard drive for the first time into safe mode (accidentally - that's what I had to do to get the usb installer to boot). The system came up and I went through the account creation process. Once that completed and I logged in, I tried to run myHack. It told me that it could not run in safe mode, and that if the system can not boot normally to try it from the usb installer. I rebooted the system using the usb stick and booted the hard drive again, but without using safe mode. It hung while booting - the last two lines of output are ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::registerLPCDriver - failed to locate SMC driver ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::registerLPCDriver - WARNING - LPC device initialization failed: C-state power management not initialized. I rebooted to the usb installer and ran myhack to install chameleon on the HDD from the utilities menu. Now I can boot to the hard drive directly, but only using safe mode. Attempting to boot normally causes the system to hang the same way I saw earlier. Ive included a screen shot.

Ok - I've made some progress. In an attempt to simplify things (for the moment) I pulled the Intel wireless card out, but have not put the Atheros Card in yet. I was able to boot from the usb drive all the way to the graphical installer where I was able to successfully partition the hard disk. Made it all the way through the install process, installed the Extras, and answered "yes" to all the questions about removing various things that will cause problems. Removed USB drive and rebooted, and now all I see is a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. Any idea what the problem is now? (Question on the side - do you have any preference about opening a new thread to address this new problem / future problems, or should I just keep working off this single thread?) Not sure if it is related, but I have still not been able to update my BIOS yet - turns out dell's are smarter then the average bear and won't let you try to flash the bios without a working battery. Which is probably for the best… a new battery has been ordered. Once I manage to get the system to boot from the hard disk, I plan on adding the Atheros card into the system. This is my first time "patching kext files" - so if you can check my understanding that would be awesome. According to the notes below the device compatibility table you linked to it says that patching means "adding the PCI ids into the Info.plist of the listed kext." I found an Atheros40 file at "/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AirPortAtheros40.kext/" - presumably this is the correct file. Inside the Info.plist are the lines <key>IONameMatch</key> <array> <string>pci168c,30</string> <string>pci168c,2a</string> </array> According to http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/277344-what-is-a-kext-and-how-do-you-install-and-patch-it/, and based on the "ven-dev id" from the table, it sounds like I should change those lines to <key>IONameMatch</key> <array> <string>pci168c,24</string> </array> Or possibly add that new string to the bottom of the existing list? Finally, it sounds like so long as the file permissions are correct I should just edit the file in place on the installed system (after making a backup of the original) and reboot? Do I have it right, or is there a different process I should be following? I know I keep repeating myself - but I really appreciate you taking the time to lend me a hand here. I'm really excited about getting this thing working!
-
Actually, I just found an Atheros 5418 AR5BXB72 which I thought I had lost. I'd like to use it instead. Thank you again for your help!
-
Thanks for the quick reply! I really appreciate your help. Sounds like I should swap out the intel wireless card for the one I pulled out of the broken macbook pro - I don't have it with me at the moment, so I don't know any specifics about it other then it came from a 2009 model. After reading your post, I read up some on the DSDT file from http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/278170-dsdt-%E2%80%94-what-is-it-and-how-do-i-get-it/. The DSDT files seem specific to hardware configurations - any recommendations for acquiring/making a DSDT file with the airport cards device information inside it? Re: Bios Version Just a few minutes ago I acquired a USB drive that boots DOS so I can flash the BIOS when I get home.
