@Hervè.. it worked.. I had to use SwitchResX in order to create a custom resolution for the display limiting the refresh at 40. Probably HDMI has a limited bandwidth. Btw, everything is all but smooth.. it's fine for text editing but not for video playback.. seems like there is still something wrong because I think 40 Hz should be enough to see smooth movements..
