    vostro 1500

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=186609 Found it... bug in mac osx 10.6.0. Updating to 10.6.3 fixed. I used 820 with nvidia kext and things seem to be working.

    vostro 1500

A friend wanted to osx his vostro 1500. From what I can gather, it's close to a 1520 with nvidia graphics. I don't care if everything runs, just kinda workable. Without any kext updates I can boot it from usb stick, but if I boot it from disk/chameleon I get a kernel panic in ioatafamily kext. (disk) I was kinda hoping one of the other supported kext packages would be close enough to make this work (possibly the 1300m) Any help on getting me at least booting?
  3. The 1395 that 'typically' comes with d430's works fine with the following update. open utilities\terminal do cd/System then cd each individual directory (case sensitive) You need to edit this file to add device id for your DW 1395:- /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleAirPortBrcm4311.kext/Contents/Info.plist sudo vi info.plist (to start vi editor) i to start insert. esc stops insert :w to write :q to quit This is what you need to add because it is not listed in original kext:- <string>pci14e4,4315</string> sudo kextcache -system-caches WAIT till done.... when you reboot all works just as if it were a rebranded airport card -- without the rebranding hassles.
  4. dd is a 'rawwrite' utility. It doesn't need a usb format, or anything -- it writes the raw data directly to the stick. use the commands you quoted and you'll be fine. Just put your image file in the same directory as the dd utility. Also the second command references the location of your usb stick that you just found from the first command. (however it may be correct as is)Device\Harddisk1\Partition0 (on my computer the c:\ drive is Device\Hardisk0\Partition0 and the first usb stick was \Device\Hardisk1\Partition0 if= means input file of= means output for file bs= block size (need to leave at 1M)
  5. standard bios at A09. When the partition didn't exist during gptedit, xp would have to create and mark active the partition you created during install. My thought was that this new partition was not sync'd with gptedit, which was what was causing my problem. The route I ended up taking I think was easier than what was on the wiki, and obviously accomplished the task for me. If you want NTFS, xp will always let you 'convert c:' to convert to ntfs from fat32 after install.
  6. OK... so I have another question -- dual booting XP and OSX... I'm following the wiki, but having issues. (btw wiki on unmount command.... should be diskutil unmount -- should fix that) Here's my issue, I run through osx install no problem, I boot to usb stick, terminal, resize, unmount, gptsync -- no issues. Boot xp sp3 disk, first part of install -- no problem. Then on reboot I get a 'Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.' You know the kind of error when boot.ini is pointing to an incorrect partition. well, triple checked boot.ini, it's 0/0/0/3 just like it's supposed to be. Well, I've installed, reinstalled -- multiple times and in various combinations. The only combination that actually let me install xp to completion, was to create a fat32 partition in installed osx (not the boot stick) then bootstick, gptsync, and install. I could install / boot xp. I thought that was the ticket until I booted to stick, chose osx and installed chameleon. Then I only got a single osx option to boot, not dual boot osx/xp. booting into osx didn't let me read the fat32 partition until I did a repair, then I could see my fat32 files in osx... but then xp wouldn't boot. auughh So... what am I doing wrong? and why does wiki state xp should be on partition 4, when I seem to always come up with partition 3? edit: ahh, think I got -- I will update in a bit. I think it helps (understatement) if the windows partition exists when you gptedit. Steps: Install osx from bootstick, reboot -- boot again to bootstick graphical diskutil, partition, shrink partition, create new partition as fat(msdos) exit diskutil terminal, unmount both osx and new fat partition, gptedit, reboot. Install xp on fat32 partition bootstick, choose osx -- install chameleon. SUCCESS !!!!!!!!
  7. ahh... combo -- there's the word I needed. I mentioned I was osx illiterate... I knew there had to be a way to just get a specific service pack... and google with the version number and the word combo took me right to it. Yea the wiki has several cards, as well as specific cards that have been re-branded as airport. My question was what card seems to work best? or should I just get a real airport card? There are several mentions on 10.6.7 and performance issues, like this: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3033131?start=0&tstart=0 I think I'll stay away from it for awhile, especially where I've had issues with it...
  8. a couple off topic questions, didn't know if I should create another thread or not, so putting it here. 1. what is the 'best' wireless card for a d430? There are several, and I have to purchase (ebay) so I want best. bcm4322? 2. 10.6.7 and video. I saw another thread with something goofy with 10.6.7 and I thought I'd share what I know. I have install with new mac mini's running through Kramer vp728 switches. 10.6.3 works perfectly fine, 10.6.7 hdmi video through kramer starts, then blacks out. Another post on apple's site shows the same thing. "something" video changed in 10.6.7 -- just not sure what. Not sure if this is related to any other video issues with 10.6.7 that folks may see -- just beware, something with auto-detect changed. 3. Is there an easy way to update from 10.6.0 to 10.6.3, and not go up to 10.6.7? I do have a retail 10.6.3 dvd. (10.6.7 seems slower than 10.6.0)
  9. Not sure if this was covered anywhere else... I have the clip on media bay for my d430 with the dvd burner. If I undock I lock and have to hard power off. work around? or some other info? Right now I have to shutdown before I can undock.
  10. you guys rock -- sent from safari on my d430-osx btw, in your edp driver options -- I have a single core d430. I had to choose the dual core d420/d430 to get my ethernet connected. After reading it, it kinda made sense, but I missed it first time. Dual Core D420 / Single or Dual Core D430 would have prevented me from missing it. thanks again.
  11. I don't think this is related to my windows creation of the usb disk... but I thought I'd ask. When I run through a complete install, it finishes, reboots and goes to a flashing cursor (like it doesn't have a active partition to boot to) If I rerun the install, in disk manager I see my 'only' partition that I'm creating is Disk0s2 (partition2) which is where I'm sure my problem is. No matter what I do in the partitioning utility, it creates a single partition as 2, not 1, and has about 5 gig in blue. Since I'm osx illiterate... what simple thing am I missing to get my install partition to be partition1, not 2???
  12. glad to help.... I've been around a bunch of os... just not osx, so thanks for being patient with me. Yes osx is installing as I type. One thing I did notice, the very last block didn't write, as my kingston 8gig was a block short of having enough space. I'm about 99% sure that's not an issue, but if anyone else runs into this with DD -- it doesn't appear to be a big deal.
  13. well... what a deal... it works. download bzip2 for windows, bunzip the file download dd for windows http://www.chrysocome.net/dd and then run dd --list (to find your usb drive) dd bs=1M if=sld430usb.img of=\\?\Device\Harddisk1\Partition0 --progress I have a bootable usb (at least I booted it to the opening screen) woo hoo !!
  14. bzcat -d sld430usb.img.bz2 > e: Thanks for the thoughts, I'm pretty sure the issue is the unmount and then direct access to the usb drive... If I can't find a way to do it in windows, I'll have to do a livecd kind of thing. I'm going to try DD for windows, like for creating an esx drive... http://www.riccardoriva.com/archives/710
  15. was on the wiki.... only osx or unix commands were given... My question was in regards to using windows, and using bzip2 for windows to do the same thing as listed for unix. on Linux: Almost thesame like in OSX if You use linux You know how to do that umount <usb-drive> bzcat SLD430USB.img.bz2 > <usb drive> does bzcat take care of everything for me? or do I need to partition the drive in some way special? I'm not sure how the osx commands below relate to what I'm trying to do. sudo diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2 [ENTER] now unpack and recover the image to /dev/rdisk2 sudo bzcat SLD430USB.img.bz2 > /dev/rdisk2 [ENTER] I believe the part I'm missing is the unmount of the drive in windows so that bzcat can decompress the image. I get an access denied when I bzcat -d sld430usb.img.bz2 > e:
  16. Ok, so apologies up front for being osx illiterate... and not having a working osx machine to create the usb install from. (however I am posting this from my d430) I first went and purchased an osx retail dvd... then realized after purchase it was 10.6.3, not 10.6.... so then I downloaded the disk image, and bunzip2 and have a decompressed image file on my hard drive. Almost any linux operating command there is some utility in windows do do the same thing, so I'm assuming I can create the disk image in xp. (bzip2 for windows has bzcat) however, I'm pretty sure I need to partition the usb stick in some manner to make it bootable... Isn't there something other than bzcat sld430usb.img.bz2 e: that I have to do??
