  1. Thanks a lot for the info! So I was wondering about the SMC keys. Initially I did use 1.69f3 but then thought I was incorrect because I found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 Based on my system specs it seemed closest to the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011). I used 1.69f4 cause I thought that was the latest for my model, but you would know better than me. Backlight did seem to make the graphics better, but still has the glitchiness. I believe I turned on the Dual Link flag in order to get the full HD resolution of my display...but I should probably test again to be sure, maybe it's unnecessary. For the dvd, I tried the approach of patching the dvdplayer kext and patching the com.apple.Boot.plist (adding mbasd=1) but neither fixed the dvd error code 70012. I'll definitely test out the various kexts for battery management. Is there a way to get those kexts from EDP? I was actually wondering if it was possible to grab specific kexts vs. doing a build? If not there, just google? Thanks again for the help...I feel like I'm getting close!
  2. Just thought I’d check in with an update. More continued progress here. Here’s what’s working: - Native SpeedStep (patched AICPM, FakeSMC/SMBIOS tuned to MBP8,2/SMC keys 1.69F4/smc-huronriver) - TurboBoost to x30 (tuned SSDT to i7-2720QM) - Nvidia Quadro 1000M with QE/CI (GE=Yes, EnableBacklight=Yes Enable DualLink=Yes) - Full audio (VoodooHDA, HDADisabler) - Intel Gigabit Ethernet (AppleIntelE1000) - Wireless/Bluetooth via Azurewave AW-CE123H (Broadcom BCM4352 + BCM20702) - USB 3.0 ports (GenericUSBXHCI) - Firewire IEEE1394 (OOB) - Sleep for system/display (set hibernate mode to 0) - HD webcam (OOB) Not working: - 02 Micro SD card reader - DVD player (cd player works & some dvd’s play audio only or just error completely) - Battery Management works but is inaccurate (using HWMonitor which seems more accurate) - Nvidia QE/CI works but is glitchy (visual artifacts with launchpad and open/close windows, scrollbars, etc.) Not tested: - Express Card - Display Port - HDMI port So overall the system is pretty stable and runs well. Just would love to get the graphics tuned better. I’ve tried a few approaches I found online like downgrading the AppleACPIPlatform.kext and IOPCIFamily.kext to version 10.9.1 but to no avail. Anybody have any other ideas how to correct some of the glitchiness with the graphics? Thanks a lot!
  3. Ok thanks for the heads up on EDP. I downloaded again, reinstalled, and reran the build process. Everything worked perfect! I added my tuned SMBIOS, ssdt and tuned the latest FakeSMC to my model number which seemed to dial in a lot of things. So a lot of progress now! The main issues I need to investigate which aren't working: 1. No shutdown. I had it before EDP so must be a kext or something that needs to be tuned? 2. No wake from sleep. I also had this before EDP so another thing to tune. 3. No sound and no volume control. Both of these also worked before the EDP build so must have to add something back? 4. My processor temps seem to be running hot in idle (I'm also hearing the fan a lot) From what I've read this processor is best at 80 degrees celsius and below: 5. Not really an issue but HD3000 only shows 1 resolution. I was able to set graphics mode to 1920x1080 in the bootlist so it is the correct resolution now, but wasn't sure if I'm supposed to be seeing other modes as well? Either way it works! Well that's the main stuff right now I'm investigating. Thanks again for any assistance!
  4. So EDP just hung indefinitely (or at least a couple hours I left it). I just quit EDP and restarted and figured I'd redo the process, but it looks like it did do at least some of the update as lists it as a MacBook Pro (early 2011) whereas it was listed as an iMac prior to the EDP installation. Do you recommend I redo the build to be safe? I noticed while it was doing the build, the interface was flashing every few seconds, but then just never completed. Not sure if that might be related to the hd3000 as I also get that flashing whenever I type a url in the safari browser. I also notice the only resolution choice I have for the display is 1024x768, no others are listed but I know that it's capable of 1920x1080. Could that possibly be from the build hanging? Going to see if I can get the Nvidia running eventually but wanted to try and get the base install working good first.
  5. Hey guys, Thought I'd just check in. So finally I have success!! I was able to get the installer to boot and have installed Mavericks 10.9.3 onto my system. Sorry again for the 5 pages of probably frustrating questions. I do appreciate the help and have ended up learning a ton about the process. So, now that I'm up and running, I did the EDP post install process step by step. The only thing I added to the Extra/include was my tuned ssdt.aml for my processor and a tuned FakeSMC for MBP8,2 to the Extra/include/extensions folder. I started the build and have let it run now for about 30 min. I know it's supposed to take a while so I didn't want to interrupt in case it's just slow with my system. But, at what point should I stop this and investigate if it just continues? Anything in particular I should check out? Thanks again for any assistance!
  6. Hey guys... Just checking back after several days of research/trial and error. Actually have learned a lot in the process and have gotten past some things, but still hung up on the graphics card. Here's what I've done so far: 1. Did some research on my model/specs and confirm that it's definitely a MBP8,2 (15" early 2011) 2. Created tuned versions of SMBIOS, FakeSMC to MBP8,2 (the FakeSMC tuning doc on this site was really helpful, thanks!) 3. Those tuned versions seemed to fix all the power management errors I was getting before (not using nullcpupower) 3. Was getting fatal errors from LPC sensors so I removed the LPC plugin from FakeSMC plugins and that fixed it. 4. I get to the point in the image below where it tries to load the graphics controller but then goes to a black screen: I've definitely turned off Optimus in Bios. In fact, I tested it being on but it automatically shuts off unless it's using Windows 7. Did some research on this and it appears that some systems with Optimus don't have a way to discretely turn off the dedicated or integrated gpu's since the dedicated passes through the integrated to the display panel. If you turn off the integrated gpu you get no video output from either card. However, supposedly with Dell systems if you turn off Optimus in the Bios, you are in fact turning off the integrated gpu and using the discrete gpu (in my case, the Nvidia Quadro 1000m) since on Dells they apparently have a connection to the display from each card. What does this all mean? Well, with Optimus off it's trying to load the nVidia card but is unable to. Playing with some of the flags in the Boot.plist I'm able to skip the nVidia and have it try to load the intel (I think), but I get the same results (black screen). Here's the Boot.plist I've tried with every possible boot flag combination I can think of: I've been researching anyone I can find with the same model laptop, and more specifically with my processor and graphics card combo. The ones that have succeeded in getting OS X to load seem to use one of these boot flag combos: -f -v GraphicsEnabler=Yes -f -v GraphicsEnabler=No -f -v GraphicsEnabler=Yes PCIRootUID=0 -f -v GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=0 -f -v GraphicsEnabler=Yes PCIRootUID=1 -f -v GraphicsEnabler=No PCIRootUID=1 I've tried them all but no luck. I noticed one used a dsdt file which I tried since we had the exact same specs, but still didn't work for me. I'm still researching more on my graphics cards but wondering, should I make my own DSDT at this point to get this to work? I'm wondering if that's how some of these systems get just the integrated card to work or vice versa. I know that Mavericks is supposed to natively support both the Intel HD3000 and the nVidia Quadro 1000m but maybe it needs the dsdt to get loaded initially? As far as my extras folder I've tried both the generic and the HP pack mentioned previously. Currently using the HP pack as it seemed to actually handle the power management better now with the tuned SMBIOS and FakeSMC files. Thanks in advance guys for any assistance. I'll continue to dig and check back in a few days hopefully with a lot more progress!
  7. Thanks a lot for the info on the perl script. I'll try that when I get home. I'm sorry for so many basic questions and I apologize if I've repeated some. I really appreciate all the help you guys have given. Alot of this I'm learning for the first time and trying to digest all the info, but definitely I'll do more research on this stuff so I have a better understanding before I ask some questions. I've actually found several sources of info that I plan to go over this weekend which I think will give me a better understanding of the overall process. That plus all the info on this site which has been really helpful. I'll check back once I've made some more progress on this. Thanks again!
  8. Well I was able to generate the SMBIOS from Chameleon wizard but I'm a little confused on how to patch the perl script. Sorry, is there any more thorough tutorial or explanation I could look at? I'm getting a no such file or directory error even though it's in the downloads folder. Also want to make sure it's not going to alter my wife's iMac and that I can get the file to the usb installer. Thanks again!
  9. Ok awesome thanks! I checked out the link you sent and the instructions for the perl script. Is it safe to run this script on my wife's iMac without affecting her system at all? Do I just have to ammend the path so that it goes to my thumb drive vs. her Mac hard drive? Same with the chameleon wizard to generate the smbios? Thanks again!
  10. So it looks like I have the OS X 10.9.3 installer. A couple notes...on my Dell product sheet it lists my processor as i7-2720M Quad Core 2.20 GHz 6MB cache. But, it was pointed out earlier to me that this is basically the i7-2720QM processor so should be fine. Also, it lists graphics as the nVidia Quadro 1000M along with integrated graphics which I believe is the HD3000 (at least according to processor specs). So is optimus graphics the ability to switch between the nVidia and HD3000 depending on what you do? I believe I do have that. You think switching off the nVidia will help it install? I'll check Bios to see if there's a way to turn off the card (or turn off the optimus graphics?). So once I'm able to get an install working on the machine, is it possible to get the nVidia card to work and/or the HD3000 or do you just have to pick one card to run with? I'm sorry for my newbie questions...but I'm not that familiar with how to patch the AICPUPM or the SMBIOS. Is there an app or something that I can use to make the patch and create a SMBIOS for my machine? I thought I came across one earlier that created SMBIOS files but I could be wrong.
  11. Well, I just remade the usb installer with myHack and then installed Extra>generic to go with the default. One thing I noticed that's different is the installer goes into a command line interface and not the gui which shows the install disk and any other partitions. But, I was able to enter - v GraphicsEnabler=Yes at the command prompt, but it still errors out in the same place (First Error.jpg image on page 2) and the screen goes black. Some questions: 1. When I create the myHack installer it always goes through the entire process but doesn't prompt to install Extras as in the documentation. At this point in the install, is that considered generic (as there is a default Extra folder)? I went ahead and opened the myHack app again and selected Install Extra where I chose generic and it installed successfully. I then ran myFix quick again to be safe. Just wondering if I should try again without doing the additional Extra install? 2. So if everything I've done was correct than I'm at the point where I need to dig deeper. Does it seem to be a graphics card issue or still a processor/hardware mismatch somewhere? I've been looking online for any info on the m4600 and ones with my specific processor type and graphics card. People have got them running for the most part, some are making custom dsdt/ssdt's with some apps that are out there? Is that a direction I should explore? Just trying to figure what the next best approach might be. Thank you again!
  12. Ok will do, I'll be trying tonight when I get home. Thanks again!
  13. Any idea to get around the laptop screen going black after error? I noticed that there's still some activity from the LED light on my thumb drive after it goes black. Just wondering if there's still more processes happening that might help figure out what's going on.
  14. Do you guys think I should just try and do the myHack install with the generic extras setup vs. HP pack I've been using? Looking online it seems some people had success with that.
  15. Ok checking back with the latest. Since I didn't seem to have my usb drive set up correctly, I started over from scratch. The following methods I tried, but they all errored out at the same point as seen in the First Error.jpg image on page 2. Sorry I couldn't grab an image this time because the screen goes immediately black right after the error. I can try to video it and grab the frame if you need. 1. Erased USB thumb drive with disk utility, reinstalled myHack with the Extras from the HP pack, then replaced ssdt.aml in Extras with the one for my processor. Ran myFix quick. 2. Removed SSDT (Extras) + AICPM kext (Extras/Extensions) and added NullCPUPowerManagement kext to Extras/Extensions. Ran myFix quick. 3. Removed AICPUPM kext from System/Library/Extensions. Ran myFix quick. Out of curiosity...should I also try removing the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient kext from System/Library/Extensions? Other than that I'm not quite sure. Fyi...I downloaded the free Mavericks installer from the app store on my wife's iMac. It downloads a .zip file that when uncompressed is a .app file. Not a .dmg file as I've seen in some documentation. Is any of this problematic? Just covering all my bases.
  16. Ok awesome...well that probably explains some things! Sorry about my newbie ignorance. I really appreciate all the help and will try this again tonight, then check back. I also plan to make a donation to the site. I have to say I am really impressed with what you guys are doing here. Just a ton of great info, tools and all the assistance you guys provide is just top notch!
  17. Hmm...strange. I double checked my thumb drive and NullCPUPowerManagement kext was in the extras folder. Does it need to be in the extensions folder within the Extras folder? I tried that as well (ran a myFix quick) but it failed in the exact same spot. Am I doing something wrong setting up my thumb drive? I followed they myHack steps exactly. The only thing that never works is the Extras installation. MyHack completes successfully but never prompts for extras installation. I have to manually run myHack again and then select install Extra (I also made sure to run myHack from the Applications folder). I then physically copied the NullCPUPowerManagement kext to the extras folder. I also made sure to disable all the virtualization tech in the bios as mentioned earlier. But, I can't seem to get it to load past this point...
  18. Ok so tonight I removed the AICPUPM kext and tried booting but I got the following error: Not sure where that leaves me. I did run a myFix quick on my thumb drive after removing AICPUPM kext so not sure if that had something to do with it?
  19. Ok cool, thanks a lot! I'll give that a try when I get home from work. So just to clarify...do I still keep the nullCPUPowerManagement kext in extras folder after I remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManegment? Also, should I continue to try and see if ssdt_i7-2720QM.aml will work, or do we know that it won't work for my processor at this point? I know this may be getting ahead of ourselves at this point (and hoping I'm understanding this correctly), but I was curious if native power managemnent might still be possible for my processor or do I need to have a custom ssdt.aml file created for my particular system? Either way, I guess the first order of business is to just try the above and get it to load first! I'll check back after I do your suggestions. Thanks again for your help!
  20. Ok so I added the nullcpu kext to the extras folder and did a my fix (quick). 1. Rebooted to thumbdrive (with ssdt.aml for 2720QM) and got the same error above in the First Error.jpg image. 2. Rebooted to thumbdrive (removed ssdt.aml for 2720QM) and got the error below: A few things worth noting: - the screen goes completely black on most of these errors after it hangs. - Whenever I've run myHack it never prompts me to add the extras folder. I always have to run myHack again and add extras then. I copied the original dmg file to the applications folder, installed it, and then run the myHack app from there.
  21. Ok so here's where I'm at so far: 1. Recreated my usb boot disk with myHack 2. Installed the bootpack that was created for the EliteBook 8560w 3. Replaced the default installed ssdt.aml file from the EliteBook pack with the ssdt_i7-2720QM.aml (should I be replacing it in original bootpack before installing?) 4. Booted Dell m4600 with myHack thumb drive and get following error. Sorry for the bad quality, I had to pull from video: 5. Removed ssdt.aml file and rebooted from the thumb drive, then got this error: Not exactly sure what to do. Just wondering, should I have a completely erased hard drive before starting this or is it ok that it currently has my old Windows 7 installed w/partition, etc.? I thought it could be formatted/partitioned during install but correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks again!
  22. THANK YOU so much! I was just googling ssdt files and wanted to clarify that my cpu is 2720M (not QM)...will the ssdt file you attached still work? If not I found some links on patching my own...either way, I'll use bootpack you listed above. Thanks!
  23. Sorry I was confused by what he meant. My initial search didn't bring up a file by that name, but under the "services" document (private>etc>services) there are 2 lines as follows: ssdtp 6070/udp # SSDTP ssdtp 6071/tcp # SSDTP Not sure if that's the same thing he's referring to? If not, what to do in the instance that there's no ssdt.aml? Thanks again!
  24. Sorry, do you mean remove the DSDT.aml that's in the extras folder on the boot disk? My cpu is an i7-2720M so different than the extra.
  25. Sorry...I used 10.9 for the Dell Precision m4600 and latest myHack.
