I'd like to update my E6220 from an excellently working Yosemite to Sierra. But since it's the laptop that I rely on for my daily work, I am super careful.

Is there any standard procedure how to backup the system so I can easily restore it if something goes wrong with the Sierra update? I haven't found anything on the forums so far, but maybe I've been looking in the wrong places...

Well, that explains why it didn't work. Still, in the end I didn't use the Optiplex but the bootpack from the Compatibility chart.
So can I try and just replace the Extra folder with the correct one from your guide and install all the kexts with KextWizard?

I used your guide, but I used the Extra folder found on the Compatibility & Bootpacks page. I first tried using the Optiplex 9010 pack. But then trackpad and keyboard didn't work in the installation menu, and external keyboard and mouse didn't work either. So I tried the other bootpack, trackpad and keyboard also didn't work, but the external ones did, so I sticked with it.

I started from the beginning and this time it worked, I still don't know what the problem was.

 

Now I have Yosemite up and running (many many thanks to you guys so far!!!), but keyboard, trackpad, wifi, battery status and sound don't work. Do you have any idea how to fix this?

Step 3 / Point 11 never happens. No chameleon boot screen appears. It just takes me back to Step 3 / Point 5.

No, sorry for the misunderstanding. I mixed things up with that last post. I didn't use myHack but this guide.

 

Just this step ("Upon completion, reboot your freshly made Yosemite installation via your USB installer and complete 1st boot system configuration) isn't clear to me. When I reboot I am only able to boot from the stick (OS X Base System). When I try to boot from the installed HDD, it says: "Selected boot device failed." And when I boot from the stick the whole installation process starts over.

Hm...I got this from the installation guide page:

 

10. At the end of the installation, you will be prompted a few questions if you are using Chameleon boot loader.

 

 

11. Wait for the installation to complete, then reboot when prompted to do so.

12. Remove your USB boot stick and boot directly from HDD if you are using Chameleon otherwise boot from USB again.

 

13. At 1st boot, you will be prompted to finalise your OS X installation (user account, registration, etc.).

 

And this is where it seems is the problem. Step 10 never happens. It just installs without any questions. And when I boot from the HDD it tells me that it's not a bootable drive. When I boot from the stick it takes me again to the start of the installation process (language selection...), no "finalisation of my OS X installation"...

Am I having a blond day?

Good that brought me some steps forward. I got to the language selection menu, was able to format my HDD and the OS X installation seemed to complete without complaint. But now I can't boot that installation. When I remove the stick and try to boot, it won't work. When I boot from the stick it always just takes me to the language selection menu / OS X installation. What step am I missing?

I just configured the BIOS setting, indeed there were to be made some changes. But still: Memory allocation error.

 

I cleaned the RAM modules, swapped them, tried each of them without the other: Memory allocation error.

Thanks for the new motivation. Still, to no avail...

 

I managed to get a Yosemite installer (10.10.4), used an iMac running EC and your guide above. The creation of the Install Stick worked fine until I tried to boot the E6220 with it. Again: Memory allocation error. I'm going crazy.

 

So I tried different machines to create the stick, different sticks, different OS X versions, different bootpacks, all with the same outcome: Memory allocation error.

So the problem seems to be with the E6220, am I wrong?

OK, it's me again.

 

I had another try at this. The first try was to use my SL Hackintosh to create the Chameleon USB installer for ML on my E6220. I always got a memory allocation error, no matter what I tried.

 

Now, second try: I used an iMac running El Capitan to create the Chameleon USB installer (again ML), even used a different stick. But again: memory allocation error. What is going wrong here?

 

The strange thing is, this only happens when I use the E6220 bootpack. When I use the generic one it takes me to the installation menu without memory allocation error. I just can't proceed from there of course, because it doesn't recognize my HDD then.

I did that, and unfortunately it had no effect :-/

That did not work either.... still the same error :-/

First I tried the suggested pack from your Mavericks guide, deleted the SNB FrameBuffer kext and installed the Extra directory on my ML boot stick.

--> Still the same Memory allocation error

 

Then I added the AppleACPIPlatform kext v1.3.6 to the folder

--> Still the same error...

Now I used MyHack to

1st Create OS X Installer (from OS X Mountain Lion Installation.app)

2nd Install Extra (E6220 bootpack)

and 3rd Install Chameleon

 

then I booted the notebook, to no avail. Still the same issue, this time with a different number:

 

Memory allocation error! Addr: 0xdeadbeef, Size 0x0, File: acpi_patcher.c, Line: 926

 

This is a non recoverable error! System HALTED!!!

This is what I eventually got after trying to boot my E6220 with Mountain Lion from a USB installation stick that I created using MyHack.

 

The first time I accidentally created a stick (using this guide: http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/documentation/pre-installation/)with a generic bootpack because MyHack didn't ask me to choose an Extra folder. When I tried booting, DiskUtility did not show my HDD (Samsung Evo 840 SDD), so I could not progress with partitioning.

 

The second time I manually replaced the extra folder on the stick with the proper Chameleon bootpack found here: http://www.osxlatitude.com/edp/compatibility/but when I booted I got an error similar to the one above.

 

The third time I used an older version of MyHack (3.1.2) and used MyHack's "install extra" feature to load the proper bootpack. When I then booted the notebook the error message on top appeared.

 

Do you have any clues? Thanks a lot!
