frank3
Over 6 months ago after many days of trial and error I managed to get OSX installed and running on an old Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 motherboard and I've updated it from v10.6.3 to v10.9.5. So I don't have a great deal of OSX knowledge/experience other than what I have learned from reading through the many, many online forums. This is my first experience with Mac's and I'm LOVEing it!! I am now trying to get my grandson's old Dell laptop inspiron 1520 running OSX. I have tried every distro or bootloader that I have been able to find online. A few days ago I ran across this guys blog... https://www.henrypoon.com/blog/2010/06/11/snow-leopard-on-a-dell. Henrypoon mentions getting OSX 10.6.3 running on his inspiron 1520 which is what brought me here with high expectations. Yesterday, using myHack 3.1.2, I got SL loaded onto a USB stick The myHack boot usb starts loading but never gets to the install screen, just shuts down. When I use the -v verbose flag, I can see the final line on the screen, "CPU halted" and that is what the computer does, shuts down! I also tried the myHack usb on my desktop with 10.9.5 installed and it shutdown as well. Could someone please tell me...is there a flag that I can set to stop the CPU halting?? Also, is it possible that the myHack v1.0.1 might work when v3.1.2 doesn't and if so, is it possible to get a copy of v1.0.1?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Administrators Hervé Posted February 15, 2015 Administrators Share Posted February 15, 2015 myHack v3.1.2 is what you need for SL. Your issue is not myHack-related, it's more likely something to do with the bootpack. What do you have in that Inspiron 1520. Should be a C2D on what I believe to be an Intel 965GM chipset, so a close cousin of the good old D630 and D830. Try and post a picture of the Kernel Panic or of that screen when the system fails. frank3
I am using my (10.9.5) computer to build the myHack usb installer. I RE-did the myHack usb installer several times and each time (I have AVG installed) AVG would find a virus and delete it and each time the install would go so far then turn the laptop off. Finally, I decided to turn AVG off before building the myHack usb and it worked, and installed 10.6.3!! FANTASTIC!! Right now I am updating, up to 10.6.5 so far, I tried jumping directly to 10.6.7 but software forces doing it in order 10.6.4, 10.6.5, 10.6.6, 10.6.7. I've read horror stories of going to 10.6.8, it didn't cause a problem when I was updating my desktop. The really important things, WiFi and Touchpad are working. Things that I guess CAN live with like graphics 1024x768, no audio, and no ethernet. I'm so leery now of making changes that might mean starting over again. Do you think I could install a bootpack that would fix these?? Like I said, FANTASTIC!! i am very HAPPY just like it is!! Thanks
Administrators Hervé Posted February 15, 2015 Administrators Share Posted February 15, 2015 No reason why your graphics would be limited to that resolution; I guess you may not have full graphics acceleration... What graphics do you have? If Intel GMA X3100, make sure to run SL in 32bit mode. To update to 10.6.8, just download the Combo update off Apple's web site. There are no horror stories that I'm aware of. Audio and Ethernet should work with VoodooHDA + Broadcom 5722D, assuming this has same hardware as D Series. Post your specs as displayed by Terminal command lspci -nn (needs lspcidrv kext installed and loaded).
frank3
YES, it's GMA X3100. How do I set SL to 32bit mode?? Right after I got SL working I used tonycrapx86's multifail trying to get the audio working and it changed the boot loader to chimera (chameleon, stolen and rebranded) even though I didn't select it. The laptop won't boot up on chimera (chameleon, stolen and rebranded), so I went through the reinstall again. I don't know how to install the necessary drivers without using multifail. Administrators Hervé Posted February 16, 2015 Administrators Share Posted February 16, 2015 Sorry, no support for any TMX stuff here. You know where to go for that... I strongly suggest you use myHack v3.1.2 to install SL. myHack provides the facility to easily install/remove kexts in/from /Extra/Extensions, leaving all Vanilla kexts untouched in /S/L/E. To boot in 32bit mode, you need to use the bootloader option arch=i386.
frank3
Herve, we had snow/ice storm (southern Arkansas) come through today and had no power all afternoon. Yesterday, when I was updating to 10.6.8, it came back up ok but would lock up and just would not run at all so I am back to 10.6.6. I tried the arch=i386 several times, the apple screen comes up normally then goes black, nothing, just blank screen. Here is the terminal output for lspci -nn Last login: Mon Feb 16 19:04:44 on console unknown001d60aafeff:~ fwalker33$ lspci -nn 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub [8086:2a00] (rev 0c) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) [8086:2a02] (rev 0c) 00:02.1 Display controller [0380]: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) [8086:2a03] (rev 0c) 00:1a.0 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 [8086:2834] (rev 02) 00:1a.1 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 [8086:2835] (rev 02) 00:1a.7 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 [8086:283a] (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 02) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 1 [8086:283f] (rev 02) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 2 [8086:2841] (rev 02) 00:1c.3 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 4 [8086:2845] (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 [8086:2830] (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 [8086:2831] (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 [8086:2832] (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 [8086:2836] (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge [8086:2448] (rev f2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge [0601]: Intel Corporation 82801HM (ICH8M) LPC Interface Controller [8086:2815] (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82801HM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller [8086:2850] (rev 02) 00:1f.2 SATA controller [0106]: Intel Corporation 82801HM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA Controller [AHCI mode] [8086:2829] (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus [0c05]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) SMBus Controller [8086:283e] (rev 02) 03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX [14e4:170c] (rev 02) 0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 01) unknown001d60aafeff:~ fwalker33$

Administrators Hervé Posted February 17, 2015 Administrators Share Posted February 17, 2015 There you go! Now you just have to tidy the installation to add support for things that may not be working such as audio or LAN...
