Dell Latitude e6500 - which OSX

bones

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys newb here, I have an old Latitude e6500 that I was thinking turning into a Hackintosh could be a fun rainy Memorial Day experience, but I have some questions if anyone can offer some advice.

I'm hoping to use this at work when I'm in meetings to Remote Desktop into my windows desktop.  So I'd prefer it to be pretty stable.  If it works maybe I'll use it for some photo editing in Photoshop/Lightroom.  I have a 500gb Crucial SSD I'm planning on putting in the box to start with a speedy fresh drive.

I've seen some mention of El Capitan running slow on this hardware.  They'd reverted back to Lion which ran smoother.  What version of OS X do you recommend?

Most of the guides I've seen are for Lion or Yosemite.  Should I just follow one of those with a different OS?

Is A24 a good bios to start with or upgrade to A26 that I've seen in some peoples signatures?

I used to tinker with MythTV DVR's and put Linux and an IR Remote receiver on an old XBox for the frontend.  So I have some experience in the area, just not with OS X.

Any other threads I should you have found helpful for setting this up?

Your laptop is fitted with a high-end Penryn mobile C2D CPU + nVidia NVS 160M GPU. It should run decently enough with all latest OS X version from Mavericks to El Capitan. My D630 nVidia is of slightly lower specs and runs perfectly under Mav/Yos/EC. It's no power beast by today's standards of course but perfectly usable daily for general desktop activity, browsing, music or videos.

You'll have to replace your DW1397 wireless card by another model as it won't be supported in recent OS X versions.

Herve, thanks for the quick reply, I guess I'll go for El Capitan then!  And thanks for the tip on the wireless!

Any other tips?

Are people able to get HDMI out and DisplayPort working?

My wife asked why I'd do this, and I said because I can, (and upgrading from XP to Win7 or 10 - would be almost as much of a pain with hunting down drivers).

I'll try to take good notes and post for the E6500.
