  1. Syonagar, Thanks for the advice. I repaired permissions with disk utility and also ran myfix full mode. While myfix was running I got two messages: System extension cannot be used: /System/Library/Extensions/ALC8xxHDA.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it or contact the products vendor for an update. The second message was the same except the kext referenced was /System/Library/Extensions/HDAEnabler888.kext So I'm thinking I need to find D630-friendly versions of these kexts, right? Thanks again!
  2. Hello, I've got a D630 with Intel graphics and Broadcom wireless, OSX 10.6.7. Been running fine for months; in fact, I've not shut it down in I don't know how long. This afternoon I shut down to move to another part of the house to work and when I booted up, the airport card seems to be recognized but I can't turn it on. I re-ran edptools but no go. The only thing I can think of that I might have changed before shutting down was several weeks ago I upgraded my version of splashtop (a remote control program for android tablet). I do recall getting some errors when it installed related to certain kexts (I can't remember), but everything ran ok after install. Perhaps it tried to update kexts related to the airport card? Any ideas? What kexts might I recopy to repair the airport card? Thanks, Tim
  3. I agree with this... I wish I was a better record keeper when I am troubleshooting and often I'm unsure to all the changes I've made including the one-off changes.
  4. Not sure why I can't post or reply to the original topic... a. Model (eg. D630-nvidia) : D630 Intel graphics b. Do you use nullcpu (yes/no) ? : Yes c. Do you use sleepenabler (yes/no) ? : Yes d. What of the 4 provided PS2 packs do you use (1,2,3,4 or other) ?: not sure e. Do you use emulated speedstep ? (yes/no): No f. Do you use voodooTSC to sync your cores ? (yes/no) : Yes g. Do you use AppleHDADisabler ? : Yes h. Are you stuck/forced to use a specific version of chameleon ? : No i. Do you use a custom kernel ? No
  5. Another update. Boom is the culprit! Messing around with audio options I turned Boom volume off and presto... I have audio again! This is odd because I've had a working Boom sound booster since the beginning. Still it's better than no sound.
  6. Time for an update... Lot's of work, little progress. Finally, I used the System Info tool to find my audio controller vendor and device ids: 8086 and 284b which I managed to add to the Info.plist in VoodooHDA.kext. This makes the volume control work (the slider moves left and right when I press the volume buttons) but I don't get the clicks and can't listen to audio through the speakers. (this is progress from the earlier symptom: pressing volume control would illumine the volume slider but not change the position). What else is needed to enable audio? So close and yet so far...
  7. Unfortunately not much progress. I'm running boom and installed soundflower recently so I may try removing those to see what happens. I removed the bluetooth associations and disabled bluetooth sharing too. Poking around other osx sites there are troubles with bluetooth and so I was looking for a way to remove or disable the DUNbluetooth service via terminal. nothing yet. On another note I did manage to boot from my usb and the system sees my time machine (running on freenas) but errors out when I try to connect. There's some issue with this that I have a lead on fixing and will report the results later. I might reinstall everything but need to figure out what to do with the handful of apps I have first so that I can recover everything.
  8. I repaired permissions (via Disk Utility). The log was substantial it seemed to me but I don't see any difference. The strange behavior of the volume control/no audio is still there. How do I boot from the DVD so I can restore from Time Machine? (or is there something next that's better and quicker)
  9. Hello, I've had a successful build of 10.6.7 since May. A few days ago strange things began to happen. I don't know the real cause and effect here, but I can tell you this: I enabled bluetooth to try to play iTunes through a new speaker I bought. Bluetooth loaded, discovered and sync'd up with the speaker, but this is where I think things went weird. My audio seems to have been killed: when I press the volume keys the meter displays but will not change and I get no audible feedback. It just blinks with every key press at the half-way point. The other odd symptom is that when I boot up, the previous airport profile is ignored and the system wants to create "Airport 2" etc. To top it all off, iTunes 10.5 refused to load, crashing at the start. I believe bluetooth and wifi might be connected in the Dell architecture, and can understand trying to send sound to bluetooth might mess up my audio driver. I was able to restore iTunes to 10.4.1 from Time Machine. I also upgraded to EDP 1.9 to try to clean up these other issues. Is this an OSX problem or OSX-on-D630 problem? Before I start over I thought I would ask. Any ideas? p.s. I also tried booting from the original snow leopard dvd in order to restore a time machine backup but it won't boot. What is the bootloader option to boot from dvd? (I confirmed I can boot from dvd by booting up a Linux disk, but snow leopard won't.) What am I forgetting? Thanks! specs: D630 with Intel Graphics, 4gb ram, 500gb hd, snow leopard 10.6.7, EDP 1.9
  10. Funny how often it happens that as soon as I post a question I stumble on the answer... I did try VLC but the problem is the system didn't recognize the internal CD/DVD drive at all. Retracing my steps I searched for the IOATAFamily.kext and remembered I had deleted it to get around an earlier kernel panic. I put it back and here's the thing learned (I think): You can't just move files around in the /Extensions directory without fixing the permissions, right? (various forums mention this but I'm not exactly clear on what this is). I reran edptool.command and used the "fix" option. Does that do this? Anyway, DVDs are good now with either the native player or VLC. And sound it working too, although pretty quiet I must say even at full volume. Thanks for the suggestions.
  11. I've been working on trying to get my DVD to work with the sound card. If I choose audio drivers in edptool.command, I get internal sound to work fine but the DVD won't work. If I rerun edptool without audio, DVD works. There are several IOATAFamily.kext's out there that I've tried. Starting to get tied up in knots with this. Any ideas? D630 - A17 Bios - Intel Graphics - 10.6.7 I'm using /Extra from Thund3rbolt due to issues with D630. Tried two different IOATAFamily.kext's Thanks!
  12. I have the D630 with Intel Graphics and no finger scan trackpad too. I updated to the latest BIOS (A17) set to default except for SATA = AHCI (initially I turned the two performance settings off the CPU because I was worried about Speed Step), then followed the USB Pen instructions using a 10.6.0 image (I was skeptical about 10.6.3). I used options -v -x -f to boot up for the install and that worked. Some kernel panics for AppleCPUPower and IOATAFamily.kext resulted in me using another MAC and a USB interface with my SATA hard drive to delete these. I suggest finding posts here from Thund3rbolt and downloading his /Extra files for the D630. There's something unique with the D630 Intel Graphics. Right now I have functionality of everything but wifi (a known issue) and DVD. After all the above tweaks I put IOATAFamily.kext back in (a special one for the D630 - make sure you search) and I no longer get the kernel panic but it croaks trying to read the disks. I wonder if there's a conflict with the audio driver because in one test the DVD played but audio was dead (for the whole system, not just DVD player). Hope this helps.
  13. UPDATE!!!! I was successful last night starting with the 10.6.0 retail load and following the method here to the letter as best as I could. I'm still analyzing it but I think one of the problems was a BIOS setting related to graphics in docking mode (?) and possibly another setting. Still backtracking to confirm the changes that enabled things to work. I successfully updated to 10.6.7 and now working through issues: 1. no DVD (i had to delete IOATAFamily.kext to get past one KP) 2. no pcmcia (looking for a short term wifi solution til i get a broadcom card) Mostly I'm plotting strategy for how to experiment with changes without killing the progress. This is a great forum, lots of good info.
  14. Hello, I've tried a number of methods getting OSX 10.6.3 retail dvd installed on my D630 with A17 Bios, Mobile Intel 965 chipset, 4GB Ram, 500 GB hard drive. Is there anything particularly troublesome about either a) 10.6.3 retail DVD or my flavor of D630? I've tried a few different OSX images but no success yet. Thanks for any tips. I'll be back with more specifics but I want to check on these big ones first.
  15. Any further progress? I have the same hardware and same troubles although I had no choice but to buy the 10.6.3 retail DVD.
