  1. Long time Linux user here (11 years on the desktop). Been toying with the idea of turning my Dell Latitude D630 (Nvidia GPU, 4GB Ram) into a hackintosh. Well I read the guide for using myHack here on the site, plus the guide for installing ML onto a D630 using myHack over on osxlatitude. What I did because I do not have access to a Mac is use VMWare player and booted a clean and fresh OSX install. (The myHack guide says VM will work for running myHack) I am using a 160GB external USB drive for my install media. My problem is tyhat during my install using myHack, the myHack app basically freezes up and flakes out. Usually it will get past transfering over all the base system files and then when it goes onto the next part it just sits there and does nothing. Or the last time I tried, it froze up about 1/4 way through the base system files. So I am very confused as to what is going on and why it won't work. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
  2. According to myHack's own guide on their site, it is supposed to work from a VM. It's right in the first part of their guide here: http://myhack.sojugarden.com/guide/ I'm not familiar with Nawcom ModCD/ModUSB, im looking into it now but a bit confused. If any of you could provide some more info on this method, that'd be great. Edit1:From reading what Nawcoms ModCD does, I don't get why I would use that in my case, but I will wait for someone with more knowledge to chime in. Edit2: I guess install Snow Leopard or an earlier version using ModCD and a retail DVD, then use THAT install to make my myHack installer on my external drive?
  3. Well I aint having much luck making the install media using myHack. Using latest 3.1.2, and it always flakes out somewhere. Im running OSX in VMware player allocating it 2.5GB of memory and both my cores, so it should have plenty of resources for doing this. Usually myHack with seemingly freeze after copying the base system files and then going on to the next step it just never transfers anything and I will wait 30min or so and it never does anything. Or this last time it froze like 1/4 of transfering the base system files to my external drive. Not sure what the deal is. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.
  4. Ok I will use one of my many external HDD's then. I have a slew of different WiFi cards, mini-pci intel 5100, 3945, the broadcom that I believe came in this D630, but what about a broadcom based card thats usb? That would be the best option so if I dual boot ArchLinux with OSX I will have wifi either way.
  5. Sorry for double p[ost, but I lost all my high capacity USB sticks. So only storage I have are microsd cards anid external hyard drives which are all used, and I dont have any SD slotys on my D630 anyway. So I hope this will work making the install media onto regular DVD, not DVD-DL? Cause I have no dual layers. Also I did some reading and it sounded like its actually easier just to use an earlier OSX version (I forget which, like two major releases ago) and just install off a Kalyway or other releasers DVD then just upgrade from that? Would that be faster than getting a retail DVD or vmware image (i was hoping to use vbox, but if vmware is a must i can live) and then makijng a hackintosh install media, etc? I dont really care all that much about l[atest and greratest version. I just want a neish version of OSX, and my hardware working. IIRC, I changed oput the mini-pci WiFi card, and I am using the Nvidia Quadro NVS 135, and I( think I can get bothj going at least on earlier versions, not sure about ML. Just checked, and yup I substituted out the broadcom which was giving me fits in Linux with a Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN. So if I can get graphics and wifi going via custom kexts I will be a happy puppy.
  6. Thanks, Im not quite up pon a lot of the terms/slang you hguys use in the Hackintosh world. (Remember im mostly a straight Unix/Linux guy). So I? guess I will take a retail cd and install it to a VM, to create my haxintosh installable media, sound good? \ Thanks for everything so far.
  7. Lots of my post got deleted, no idea why............. I bought the D630 ntoi replace my T61 IBM. All for 99 dollars: 4GB DDR2 upgrade and the dreaded Quadro NVS 135, tyho I seemed to fix it just fine after removing the thermal pad and applying AS5. I am very competent with PC's. Anyway been using Unix anid Lnnux for 12 in some fashion, mostly day to day Linux. But I would love to give OSX a try. Im just vary confused about OSX86 install, looked the guide in this thread, seemed I needed an already working OSX machine, I don't have that. I don't mind using a semi earlier build than just updgrade from there. Like I said I am familiar with UNIX which is what I am interested in having commercial support from Apple while having a UNIX shell and being to compoile Android/Cyanogenmod builds and other AOSP builds. I do lots of AOSP android stuff. BTW if someone can help with the installing stuff, thats my main goal ATM. I bet I could probably figure out kext stuff for my wifi and quadro stuff hopefully. Just wanna say if anyone has an Android that can support CM7/CM9/CM10 o9r other AOSP builds like AOKP (my fav)(im certain I can help you out as a gesture of thanks.) So if someone can me a good start. I remember using some EFI tool to dual boot on my old MAcBookPRo 5+ years ago, but thatr eas some time ago. So if you can guide me. If you guys use gtal;k, sklype or anything lemme mknow. I didnt add skype to profile cause i never use it, but for this I would be willing. BTW the laptop is on Wiundows 8 Enterprise but I have NO qualms about deleting it, half my stuff doesn't run. And with boot camp i can easily install/run Win7. So yes, please help a fellow out. I may be a newb to OSX but I wouldnt call myself a noob to Windows, Linux, QNX, BeOS and various Unix builds and FreeBSD or just computing at all. Help much appreciated.
