Administrators Hervé Posted November 26, 2018 Administrators Share Posted November 26, 2018 Last updated: 5 Oct 2026 We occasionally get questions about compatible graphics cards, so these articles should be useful for Hackintoshing purposes: 1) Best budget (under $50) graphics cards Some of those cards are compatible with macOS up to High Sierra. Only a handful support Metal and Mojave/Catalina/Big Sur, i.e. Kepler architecture for nVidia (e.g.: GeForce GT 710) and GCN1.0 architecture for AMD (e.g.: AMD R5 240). And remember that, since Monterey, macOS dropped all support for nVida cards. From Monterey to Tahoe, AMD Polaris (Baffin & Ellesmere) cards such as the Radeon PRO WX 4100 or low end Radeon RX4x0/5X0 may be found around $50 on the 2nd hand market. 2) Best low-profile single-slot graphics cards for Small Form Factor (SFF) PCs Many of those cards are compatible with late versions of OS X/early to mid versions of macOS. Afaik, compatible cards meet the minimum requirements for Metal but caution with nVidia cards since Mojave/Catalina/Big Sur only support Kepler models and, since Monterey, macOS dropped all support for nVida cards. From Monterey to Tahoe, the best cards to use are AMD Polaris 10 (Baffin & Ellesmere) models such as the Radeon PRO WX 4100, the Yeston Radeon RX550 4GB DDR5 LP (640SP, not 512SP), the Yeston RX560 4GB DDR5 LP (896/1024 shaders) or Navi 23 low-profile single-slot RX 6600 (if found). 3) Best 1080p gaming graphics cards under $150 Those are good and reasonably priced cards, some compatible with late versions of OS X/early, mid and late versions of macOS. Some do not need dedicated power supplies and will draw power from the PCIe bus. Afaik, compatible ones meet the minimum requirements for Metal but, again, caution with nVidia cards in Mojave/Catalina/Big Sur since those only support Kepler models and, since Monterey, macOS dropped all support for nVida cards. From Monterey to Tahoe, AMD Polaris 10 and 20 (Baffin & Ellesmere) cards such as Radeon RX 460/470/480/560/... or Navi 10/20 RX55xx/56xx/57xx/66xx are again a must though latter may be difficult to obtain under $150. The site offers other "best graphics cards..." articles like "under $100", "under $200", etc. All available through a basic search.
