Dell Vostro 5568: macOS Catalina optimisation
jantestmac replied to jantestmac's topic in The Archive
Yes as I mentioned I was using the whole bootpack which was provided by @Syonagar for Catalina which includes VoodooHDA so I guess that's why and other than that yes I have changed that anyway with the Big Sur Bootpack (Which has AppleALC). let me provide you the EFI it would really help if you could check that out thank you Here is the EFI Note: In this I currently have the BRT6 of the bootpack provided by Syonagar. I had replaced it with SSDT-BTS6 first which you provided but It didn't work so I thought why not give this SSDT-BRT6 a try -

Oh thank you for that help I just asked cause the bootpack for both were different so Should I also update my bootpack to Big Sur? Lol Sorry for this thing but it turns out that I thought that It won't work without updating EFI and @Syonagar also suggested that big sur is compatible And I even wanted to try out AppleALC so I did 1 . Modify the existing EFI with the Big Sur bootpack of Syonagar's post keeping the CPUFriend kext and SSDT-DDGPU and SSDT-BRT6 which you provided me recently 2. Took the clean snapshot in config plist to make things work and also changed the Serial Number In the config Plist And placed this in EFI partition to boot I can boot properly but I have following issues. 1. Brightness hot keys are not working anymore 2. AppleALC is actually worse. I really can not get the perfect balance in headphone jack to make it work lol(Full plug in doesn't work). -

I was eagerly waiting for the reply lol. Thank you for confirming that really thanks Jake for that file I guess which helped me disable that dGPU. But then what should I do to fix poor battery life (which is really less than half than what I used to get in windows) -

Sorry for this kind of question But where should I look in here? I googled a bit but could not find a proper place to look for. Also I really appreciate you taking time to reply really thank you. And I saw your many posts in past few days and saw you've got almost similar battery life as windows in the post I saw I really wish I could have the same Please Do let me know what should I look for inn this IORegistryExplorer for checking that dGPU status. -

I was getting around 6-7hours (Sometimes in between given the work I do is mostly watching course videos and surfing). Though I should mention I have replaced my battery 3 months ago only. And the new battery is same as the older one i.e. same model etc. Also again if I may mention the battery life looks as if its increased from the SSDT which Jake Provided(Thanks a lot Jake for that). But still it is reaching around 3 hours. To test the battery life I put on a video of 3 hours and put the laptop on side while video was still running and after then video was finished I had 6% battery left so and given that the video was not exactly of 3 hours i am saying I am getting 3 hours battery life right now. I should mention one more thing I have also used CPUFriend kext with CPUFriendFriend (Though haven't installed anything from tools just these kexts) and set up min frequency to 800Mhz and similarly other two things too. But no help in the battery department even after that. Also when I was googling for any potential solution I found people talking about drain on their system and checking it using Intel Power Gadget. When I tried Installing that it doesn't open(It doesn't show up in Privacy for opening). And I searched about that issue on google some other issues came up which suggested IPG sometimes breaks the system. So I dropped idea of installing IPG -

Thank you for the reply. I have dimmed the brightness as suggested And Have just one chrome window open on a fresh install And using m.2 sata ssd as primary drive But still getting around 3 hrs after the SSDT-DDGPU which @Jake Lo Provided in the very first message of his. (Note: This battery life is increased from this SSDT I havent tested from any software or something but I do feel it's giving me more than before Thanks Jake for that.) Other than this poor battery life thing and brightness hotkeys not working I think laptop seems pretty good actually. Really thank you for making this boot pack. I would really appreciate any help in right direction for battery thingy cause as it's my only machine 3 hours seems really less .(Also I am assuming that headphone jack won't fix in near future so not talking about that at all ) -

Oh thank you for telling about the compatibility thing. Oh and I wanted to know about the codec for that headphone jack being combo as you suggested earlier. So I wanted to try out a script which I found here named ALC298PLUGFIX Or something similar. Also how much battery life should I expect i have original battery which i replaced 2-3 month ago. -

But I am on Catalina Should I straight up replace EFI with this bootpack which is under BigSur?? Also can you tell me How can I check audio codec without using windows? Please don't think i didn't try to check out it. Before installing when I was preparing I searched on google and Dell's website stated that it has Realtek 3266- CG and I believed it to be true. But now I don't know what's correct one. And I don't have windows now to check -

How do I find out if I am using AppleALC as I checked the kext folder of bootpack from @Syonagar and there is VoodooHDA present. That's why I asked. And also I managed to fix that apple Logo thingy by booting through USB with previous config file using proper tree to build the config file using snapshot of OC(with that SSDT-* in ACPI you provided) and replaced that in EFI partition. And it is booting up again. -

I did try out layout-id : 13, 16 and 56 all three of them is giving almost equal poor sound. Though I should mention one thing while googling here and there I saw someone claiming that changing balance of headset(Under Sound Preferences) fixes sound I tried to Slide balance to ALL the way to R(Right) and to my surprise it does make a difference and the sound is a bit better but still its not fixed i.e. I am still getting a bit faded sound and noise when I increase the volume. Will changing VoodooHDA to AppleALC help? If so How Can I change my audio kext to AppleALC? To check If VooDooHDA is the problem I am really down to change that too cause the sound in headset is really poor? or is there anyother potential solution I should try. -

Yes I haven't done any changes to the bootpack which @Syonagar provided. Let me try replacing this in the EFI partition(Oh btw I finally mounted after you said to copy EFI Folder) EDIT: So I copied that file in ACPI folder and Replaced config.plist from Zip in EFI Partition and restarted the laptop but now it's STUCK on a screen with apple LOGO with no progress bar. And The Contents of EFI Partition Right now is All files from the Bootpack Along with the SSDT-* file you provided and the config.plist of bootpack is replaced with yours. Rest everything is same as that bootpack. I also tried RESET NVRAM option from picker but no help -

@Jake Lo, Thank you for the reply I am just copying it now :). For Battery i.e. 940MX, how do i make sure it's disabled? I did use @Syonagar's bootpack and assumed he might have provided proper SSDT and I don't have a windows in this machine is there any way to compile SSDT in MacOS? Or any way to get prebuilt SSDT.? For Audio: I am pretty sure it's not hardware thing as I watched the opencore guide yesterday in windows Lol. Anyway It's not just about headphone jack the audio quality is also really poor on headsets.(I am not sure about speakers as I haven't heard them from nearly 7-8 months in windows too) It's a bit hard to find right words but It kinda sounds like a bit faded or so. And when I turn the volume to full a lot of noise is there. (This type of sound sometime comes from my dekstop when I accidentally pull out the headphone jack a bit from cpu so I thought it's cause of headphone jack but don't know exactly) Any help will be appreciated @Syonagar, Oh okay but As I mentioned in another post it's not really about headphone jack. I meant that even audio quality is really poor in headset. Kinda Faded sound comes (Like mono or something I am not sure about exact words) and when I turn the volume more than 70-80% there is too much noise. Also as @Jake Lo Suggested have you disabled 940MX? Cause I am getting really poor battery life? Or if you haven't was it supposed to be done by me? If yes then how should I do it on MacOs as I don't have windows on this machine now? Oh Also I an being a bit Paranoid about this EFI folder whether to copy it into EFI partition or not cause if any kext is wrong will I be able to change it if macOs don't boot?? Also thank you for the reply really appreciate it -
Hello Everyone, I joined today and installed macOS on My Dell Vostro 5568. It has i5-7200U + GeForce 940MX. As a test, I did use @Syonagar's OpenCore Bootpack for Catalina (thanks for that). And as a surprise It did get installed successfully with the mentioned issues. However now I am not sure which EFI folder to copy into The EFI partition of the laptop. The given bootpack the EFI one or the one in MacOSX folder? So I have not yet mounted EFI partition and using usb drive to boot. Other than that I also have two more known issues if anyone have any solution please provide. 1. Really Poor battery life I am getting 2-2.5hrs which is almost half or even less than half of windows. 2. A bit lower quality audio from Headphone Jack and Speakers. Also if this helps to figure out problem the headphone jack doesn't work when inserted full we need to pull it a bit out Thank You for helping in Advance.
