  1. isn't that great - i post and then i reply... anyway, i think the video driver may not be my problem. I tried all 3 related drivers to the same end result - blank screen that happens too quick for me to figure out where I die...
  2. sorry, i meant GMA950
  3. Well, I have been trying to get my D630/Intel video to boot up to normal mode (not safe mode). EDP associates (I think) D630/Intel with X3100. How do I replace the X3100 kext with the one for GM965 (i think this one is associated with D620/Intel) ? I tried the D620/Intel on my D630 and nothing worked (not surprised..). I am able to boot into safe mode but I cannot get ethernet to work reliably, sound does not work and i am sure power management is all screwed up. Again, I am in safe mode and I would like to replace the X3100 video kext with the GM965 kext, I need a detailed set of instructions as I am not a native to Apple's OS X.
  4. hello latitude hacks!

i am new to hacking and new to mac os.

i develop SW for a living so i am not new to the concept of the kernel panics! :)

    Without a Mac

ok, after i renamed the fakeSMC dir in EDP, my Ethernet connection is up, however, i still need the -x in order to boot. without the -x, the boot process takes about 45-50 seconds and then the screen goes blank. When I use -v to try to see where exactly that happens, it happens too fast and I can tell. i will try to get more info on this. Another thing that's happened since i got the internet connection is that Chameleon from edptool can stay up - it crashes. If I disconnect the network cable it stays up but will only let me update the flags - changing the boot sector requires internet connection. Any insight as to why Chameleon crashes when network connection is present? I seem to be making good progress and I really appreciate the help from you and Andy.

well, i am able to boot into osx (before I attempt to use EDP to re-build...). where would i find this kext? i am fairly confident around Unix/Linux command shells as well.

So how do i remove fakeSMC ?

    Without a Mac

it occurs to me that this (fakeSmc) is being added by installing and/or using EDP in the prescribed manner. I say this because, before I install and use EDP, I can boot all the way with -x. does this make sense?

    Without a Mac

how do i do that? can i do this while my HD based OS is in the dumpster i.e. boot from the pen and access the HDD somehow? rememeber: 1) I am Mac OS green. 2) I started from SLD430USB.img . For all i know - this is a binary, right? and if so how do I 'remove' stuff out of there?

    Without a Mac

Following all the above I get KP (-x no longer boots, OS is completely down.) Error messages start with OSMetaClass: Kext org.netkas.fakesmc class FakeSMC is a duplicate; kext org.netkas.FakeSMC a;ready has a class by that name Kext org.netkas.fakesmc start failed (result 0xdc00400a). Kext org.netkas.fakesmc failed to load (0xdc008017). 1. After installing Chameleon from edptool, I ran it and looked at the flags - they were the same as in org.chameleon.boot.plist. When I tried to run anything Chameleon's 'Install' tab - they all failed, requiring a network connection to be set...duh 2. If by bootpack you mean the EDP, I downloaded 1.9.2 which is the latest required for SL - right? 3. As I mentioned before, following this procedure gives me KP very early and I have to reinstall from USB and start from scratch. Do you know what kext or set of kexts are required for ethernet to work? What I am thinking is, after I boot into safe mode, if I can just get internet connection within safe mode, maybe following the setup you recommended will actually work... off to reinstalling my OS... thanks

    Blank Screen

is there a way to single step through the -v boot process? is there a boot log that is written to the HD (obviously more than one boot information...)?

Hi, I am still not able to get ethernet to set up on my D630. See details in my reply to Andy below.

    Without a Mac

i tried iboot (chameleon, stolen and rebranded)/10.6.0 retail combo on my D630 and I can never get it to boot. When I use -v, I see a kernel panic right after disabling the second IDE channel. I can never get pass this point and I tried all 8 combinations of PCIRootUID(0,1), w/ or wo/ -x and GraphicsEnabler(yes,no). The only way I can install an OS is to use the SLD430USB.img but this only works if I use -x. Booting with -x disables some drivers among which is the Ethernet/Network drivers which is basically the only thing I need. I don't care about dual boot, don't care about audio, video (it comes up 1024x768 and that's enough for now). I don't even care about booting directly to HD, using the USB pen works and that's fine. I installed the latest EDP from osxlatitude and rebuilt the driver set for a d630/intel (selection 6) but that did not alleviate the need to boot with -x, hence i am still stuck without Ethernet. My only remaining problem is networking. If anybody out there knows a way to get me there I would appreciate the help.
  14. well, the good news is that now i know what edptool is, and i know what 'install Chameleon from EDP' means. the bad news is that when I select 6 (D630+Intel X3100, I assume this is Crestline) from the Kext models available it destroys my SL installation - it can no longer be booted and I have to restore it by reloading from the USB pen (a 45 min hit...). The confirmation info just before the kext build starts states that the model build is i386 - somehow this does not seem right but i could not find a way to change of affect this... Help!!!
  15. sorry, I found how to do an EDP build - let me look through this first...
  16. 1) Bios says I have Intel Crestline (not nvidia). 2) How do 'build EDP' for that video?
  17. I am trying to get a D630 to boot Snow Leopard to the point where it has internet connection. My D630 is a Core2 Duo system. I used windows install disk to remove all partitions from the HDD. I downloaded SLD430USB.img (to my home PC) using instruction from http://www.osxlatitude.com/creating-a-usb-pen-with-osx-installation/ I used TransMac to format my USB flash stick and then used the dd command to load the image into the USB flash drive. After this step, TransMac actually showed my flash drive as a valid mac disk. I downloaded EDP 1.9.2 and used Transmac to transfer this to the flash drive. I used the same mechanism to load Chameleon-v2.0-RC5-r665.pkg_.zip from the page above and transfer to the USB drive. I then was able to boot from this USB flash drive but only if I typed 'PCIRootUID=1 -x' when the boot menu showed the USB Mac Os icon. The system then walked me though the install process which I used to create a single partition and format it (HFS+ Journaled). After installing both EDP and the Chameleon packages, the boot process was stable but only if I used the above mentioned boot flags. If I forgot to type those in, I would end up with a blank screen shortly after startup. Without changing anything through Chameleon yet, I tried to use the network assistant to setup my internet access. I then would not be able to select any type of connection (I have a DSL connection with a router anf the D630 is connected to one of the router's ports. I think this is due to the safe mode. So, why am I forced to boot into safe mode? Can someone please help out on this? Ovi

    Without a Mac

well, i have some good news. I am now able to boot from a pen and install Mac OS X on my D630's single partition. Without a mac, what has been needed (so far) is a tool to format Mac partitions on the pen. Such tool is TransMac (15 days free, $48 license). http://www.acutesystems.com/ Once the partition was formatted (16G flash) I was able to use the 'dd' command to upload the SLD430mac.img to the USB pen, add the EDP (using transmac) and after numerous prodding and pleading the pen booted up (boot parameters - PCiboot (chameleon, stolen and rebranded)UID=1 -x) and created Mac OS on the hard disk (which i previously cleared using Win7 install CD to remove all partititons...). Problems so far: 1) If I use Chameleon to try to boot from the HD, it trashes my Mac OS (have to start the install using the pen all over again). 2) After installing the EDP, Can't get to the Internet. (Using wired connection to my router). So I guess it is possible to load Mac OS X SL on a D630 without a mac - i will defer judgement on whether this is actually useful until after I get a smooth boot and an internet connection... again, thanks for your help. i will continue to flail around and hopefully manage to get this to be useful for me.

    Without a Mac

shouldn't we remove the part on windows or replace it with a procedure that works, if any? Can I please bother you with sending me a link to the "leppys" boot disk? thank you for responding to my loud screams for help o, and what did i do to deserve the 'sir'?

    Without a Mac

if you notice, this second link has 2 methods. one that requires the mac (the one you pointed to), but further down there's a second method that makes a point of NOT needing a mac, instead making use of 'our premade image' . I have seen a lot of examples of people accomplishing a hackintosh having access to a mac and an admin account on that. I was looking for someone who could help me get it done WITHOUT a mac (as I don't have one) as the second method on the second link claims... thanks Ovi

    Without a Mac

http://www.osxlatitude.com/howto-install-osx-snow-leopard-on-your-dell/ claims no Mac is necessary (required list does not mention a mac) and links to http://www.osxlatitude.com/creating-a-usb-pen-with-osx-installation/ which makes it seem that the USB pen can be made (and boot) without a Mac (on a PC only). The second page does nto explain how to add the extra.zip and the chameleon package to the USB pen when only a PC is available. In the first page, step 2 says 'install and boot' - install and boot what? the writeup is too concise catering to experts who might not need it and not detailed enough to some who can use the help. I have the laptop, the authentic Snow Leopard family pack DVD, all sorts of flash USBs and the ability to burn DL DVD. I toyed a bit with Chameleon for Windows but never got it to actually help out in booting anything. I am not bent on getting a multi boot machine - just want a simple, Snow Leopard laptop. A good example of a writeup is : http://lifehacker.com/5351485/how-to-build-a-hackintosh-with-snow-leopard-start-to-finish too bad it requires an admin account on and actual Mac. thanks for any help and I will contribute a writeup suitable to novices like myself when I am done Ovi

    Need Help

i have downloaded the latest Chameleon for Windows, installed it on my laptop, connected the USB pen. When I clicked 'install' on the tool, nothing seems to happen. I restart the laptop (with the USB pen still in) and Win7 comes up as before. Has anybody tried going the complete Windows way? Anyone willing to try this? (BTW I do have a 'legal' Snow Leopard family pack DVD). Please help.

    Need Help

so, is it true to say that the Windows instructions for the USB pen should at least mention that more steps have to be executed after the 'dd' command and before you can expect to use this USB pen on the target machine? Also, just to clarify, Chameleon (once installed on the main HD) would 'know' where to find the OSX on the USB pen? or, it (Chameleon) would be used to modify the USB pen so it is bootable? sorry about being a pest, but so many of these posts are from expert to expert, they clarify 1 issue and hint at 10 others thanks for taking the time... ovi

    Need Help

Hi, I used 'dd' in windows to load the SLD430USB.img to a usb drive. This operation took a while (showed sane progress) and completed without obvious error messages. ===================== I:\>dd bs=1M if=SLD430USB.img of=\\?\Device\Harddisk2\Partition1 --progress rawwrite dd for windows version 0.5. Written by John Newbigin <[email protected]> This program is covered by the GPL. See copying.txt for details 8,032,092,160 7660+0 records in 7660+0 records out ===================== I took this to my D630, used the BIOS F12 to force boot from the USB device and the process fell through to the HDD boot which failed. I seem to be missing a step to add a valid boot loader or something. Any ideas?
