  1. Re: Wifi cards, I think it works straight away with DW1390 and DW1490 models. DW1395 requires specific Broadcom kexts or modified IOFamily/80211 kext (can't remember its exact name, but there's a thread about it here, somewhere).

Yes - I have a 1390 card and it worked otb with mountain lion. There is a modified IOFamily/80211 supplied with my lion install guide for the D630 which I found works well.

  2. I envy those readings. On my D630 nVidia, CPU T° is in the mid-60s to high-70s range most of the time. It idles around 58°C. I should reactivate my Coolbook license (mislaid many moons ago) and try to undervolt the CPU like I do under Windows.

This is the sort of things I run the D630 GMA on and it peaks in the low 60s (idles around 38-39°C):

Under Mac OS the CPU voltage is between 1.12V (@600Mhz) and 1.36V (@2.2GHz). Quite a difference...

Hmm Yes I achieve about the same temps as you, i was just saying that when i ran the fan full for about 10 mins, that the lowest I could get it.

There is quite a difference. I am thinking of undervolting - does it damage the cpu or reduce performance? And if I undervolt so my CPU temp lowers, do you think it will affect the GPU temp?

I got a big shock when I saw my GPU at 60/70 because my desktop hackintosh only ever gets a maximum of about 45C :)

I assume the laptop is built to withstand it.....

  3. Same here, I had it running on my D630 Intel and the constant fan flapping was irritating me. It all stopped after I disabled the BIOS Fan Control through the hidden menu. Then it works perfectly (or nearly perfectly as settings cannot be saved and need to be re-programmed after a reboot). My Tjmax is set at 100 (I have a T7500) and I notice a difference of a few degrees (3 to 4) between the T° reported by i8kfan and iStats, the latter being lower.

Re: hidden menu, I can report similar behaviour on the D630 nVidia: it is not displayed when calling it from within the OS, it has to be done at BIOS level or before boot time.

The way I run i8kfan on the Lion-based D630 Intel at the moment is as follows:

    1) I copied the 32bit kext to /E/E then ran a full myFix.

    2) I launch the app through the user startup settings, but this is not perfect as I get prompted for password every time I reboot or restart the session.

I could not do the same on the ML-based D630 nVidia, the 64bit kext just would not load after running a full myFix (whether kext was copied to S/L/E or /E/E). I have to load the 64bit kext via the "sudo kextload" command before I run the app. But it works well and on that system, i8kfan T° are aligned with that reported by iStats (taking the different iStats refresh interval into account). It's particular useful on the nVidia systems as these run much hotter than the GMA versions, so every bit of cooling fine-tuning helps (albeit at the exepense of quietness).

I've tried both v01 and v02 without problems.

I just managed to access the hidden menu you were talking about. After having my laptop on for a while, and then restarting into the menu I saw my CPU was about 50 and GPU about 65 which looked a bit worrying....

Because I am running Mountain Lion, and it is harder to get the fan control working, should I bother, or will it be better to prolong the life of my nvidia card?

Also, what does MSR CPU auto throttling and GMCH Throttling Control do?

Edit: I disabled BIOS fan control and ramped the fan to the max. The lowest I can get the GPU to go is 60C and CPU 46C. I also have the newer copper heatsink. What are the safe tamps for this graphics chip in these models - I have read that aslong as its under 85C its fine?

    Thanks,

    Seb

  4. Hi,

I tried installing the 64-bit only kext (as I have mountain lion) and cant seem to get it wokring - it shows an incorect low temp.

What version of bios are you using?

Do I put it in just extra or system/library/extensions?

Also I was using version 01 (cant find where to get 0.2) does this matter?

Would love to get fan control working!,

    Thanks

  5. Hi, yes strange, i was only on 600Mhz.

How did you get that little button on the menu bar for selecting the speed?

Funny of you to call it thistle country! Theres actually not a thistle to be seen where I live. I live on the scottish border (south of edinburgh) - not far from England.

  6. Yes speedstep was enabled, and dynamic acceleration turned off. Also when doing the edp configuration, I selected emulated speedstep but it never worked.

I am wondering if something strange happened when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I restored the computer from the time machine backup made in Lion, and it might have changed some settings.

Nevertheless, it is nice to be able to now set frequencies and voltages for my CPU. I feel really stupid using my laptop when it was only running at 600Mhz, now speedstep works, it operates 3 times faster!

  7. Hi,

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I thought my mac was working a bit slowly. In about my mac it said 2Ghz Dual core.

When I ran geek bench it told me it was running at 600Mhz, and scored a measly 900 points. I thought come thing was wrong.

After alot of consideration, I splashed out and bought myself a license for coolbook. Before, coolbook also registered the CPU at 600Mhz. Once I activated cookbook, edited and saved the different speedster values and rebooted, it now switches correctly between the different clock speed.

After running Geekbench again, I scored a much better 2872, and the CPU can actually now run at 2Ghz (even if it does go upto 55C)

I recommend that anyone with Mountain Lion on their Latitude gets Coolbook so they can unlock the full performance of the Hackintosh Laptop,

Also - anyone have any good advice on different settings for speedstep on the D630?

    Thanks,

    Seb

  8. Hello,

which one Extra folder is recommended use for instalation?

    - Extra from 1'st page this thread

    or

    - Extra bootpack from main page E.D.P/Bootpacks

    Thanks.

The bootpack that I have included is very similar to the one provided. It does have an older ACPI kext from snow leopard though that seemes to fix it from halting at ACPI system state. I wll have a look later on, and email the updated one so it can be put into the edp.

  9. Dynamic acceleration was on in the Bios. Turning it off and re-running EDP/Myfix solved the reported CPU clock rate issue but the video chipset still shows an NVidia 8400. It looks like this is set in the DSDT.aml file. Searching the content of the one that is currently in the "Extra" folder lists the NVidia 8400 while the one in your supplied DSDT.aml file properly lists the NVidia 135. I wonder if the running of EDP (with options 1,9) caused the DSDT.aml file to be replaced or modified? Can (should) I replace the current DSDT.aml file with the one that you supplied?

Thanks for the info on the GPU problem. I did know that the reflow trick is a temporary fix. My understanding is that the chip packaging design is fundamentally problematic (possible combination of high lead chip pad solder bumps vs eutectic substrate pad solder bumps, poor underfill material characteristics, chip pad placement vs thermal hot spot locations, etc.). What do you mean by doing a "reball"?

My D630 already had the later copper heatsink. The thermal compound that Dell used had failed (hardened, cracked, partially flaked off). Also, the GPU had a copper shim (in addition to the thermal pad) that had slipped halfway off the chip top, preventing full contact with the heatsink. I cleaned off and replaced all of the old thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5 and relocated the shim.

I reckon you should delete you whole extra folder, and replace it with the one I supplied with this tutorial, because we know that works. Then re install edp and see how it goes.

A reflow just heats up the solder balls, and joins the cracked connections. A reball involves completely removing the BGA chip and replacing all the little solder balls with new ones, and then putting it back on the board. It requires alot of skill, and expensive equipment that most dont have.

  10. Glad to hear that it is a known issue. Just wanted to make sure that my install was correct.

I don't seem to have a problem with the microphone. Seems to work fine after sleep/wake.

Just verified that Bluetooth does have the problem though.

One other thing that is odd. System information shows my video card as "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS".

I thought that, at one point, it correctly showed the video chipset as an "NVIDIA NVS 135M" (maybe before I did an automatic software update to OS 10.8.1?).

It also shows the computer model as a "Macbook3,1" with a processor speed of 2.01 GHz. The actual processor is a T7500 with a clock speed of 2.2 GHz. Could it just be reporting a closest match to actual Apple hardware?

BTW, last week I experienced the well known (and dreaded) Nvidia chip thermal failure. Did the motherboard baking trick and, to my absolute surprise, worked great. It is actually really easy to do with the help of some YouTube disassembly videos. Took just a few hours and gave me the opportunity to improve the heatsink coupling to the chips. The GPU idle temps are now between 52C and 57C (idle temp was running at about 70C before the fix).

Hi, the 10.8.1. update does NOTHING at all to kext or system configuration files, it just fixes files so it shouldn't be affected by that. Make sure you have the correct bios settings: speedstep enabled, hyper threading and multicore but dynamic acceleration OFF. Macbook 3,1 is the system definition that works best with Latitudes, i dont think it will affect the specs. Make sure you havent chosen the intel version of the D630, and try re-running edp. After you have done that, run a myfix full and reboot.

Yes I have heard of that gpu problem (I actually repair laptops for people and do reflows on laptop motherboards quite frequently). am sorry to tell you though that a reflow will not be permanent - it will probably last no more than 2/3 years at the most. A reball is the best option. Make sure you have the new all-copper heatsink which is superior to the older one. Also, I have put 2 thermal pads (actually taken from an xbox 360) on the 2 memory chips for the GPU to cool them further. Try doing a stress test on the machine. Then touch the heatsink. My general rule is if you cant hold your hand on the heatsink for 10 seconds, its running too hot. Before I put mac os x on, i had vista on the laptop, and the gpu was around 50-60 for me, so I reckon your good. I had to get the dedicated nvidia model becuase I do alot of cad/3d animation which is what the quadro chips are actually optimised for (they arent great for games though). Anything is better than intergrated though....

    Hope this helped,

  11. Thanks so much for this great guide and pre-loaded Extras folder!!

Everything seems to be working really well except the wired ethernet becomes disabled after the machine wakes from sleep. Only a complete reboot seems to bring it back. WiFi does not exhibit this behavior.

    Any ideas?

Glad you got Mountain Lio working! Yes, I am aware that ehternet and bluetooth and microphone dont wokr after sleep, but I cant really complain.

Atleast the laptop CAN actually sleep, these are only a few issues i think we will have to put up with when running mac on unsupported hardware.

  12. Hello,

Apple has just released the 10.8.1 update for mountain lion macs.

It is extremely simple to update (nothing like 10.7.4 which was an absolute nightmare!!!)

Just go to software update, select the 10.8.1 update and let it do its thing.

It will say that the installation of the update failed, this is normal, and the update has actually installed.

Reboot, and you now have 10.8.1.

    Everything still works!

    Hope this helped,

    Seb

  13. Hi,

I got it to work better. I tried VMWare fusion and it is useable now.

I cannot have a dual boot, because I take my laptop to school, and I can only connect to the school network with mac os x, but some of my windows applications need to also connect.

    Thanks,

    Seb

  14. I am new for this blog and totally no idea about installation of MAC OS . So please can any one guide me the in detail instruction to setup Mountain Lion in my Dell D630 Lap with 2GB of RAM n C2D processor.

    Thank u.

Yes, just follow this guide and let me know if you have any problems on the way, it is pretty simple to install Mountain Lion Though!

    Seb

  15. Update to the latest bios (A11 i think) also, the bootpack I provide with this tutorial should already have the old AppleACPIPlatform.kext included in it.

If you get stuck on the PCI Configuration Begin please go back to my OS X Lion guide, where I adress the problem with updating to 10.7.4 and include a download with a few kexts that fix that problem.

    Hope you get it working!

  16. Hi,

I have installed XP on paralells desktop for mac. Even though I have 4GB ram and the 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, Windows XP is unbelievably slow.

On my desktop hackintosh with very similar specs, it is actually useable.

Any one else having problems with this, and should I try VMWare instead?

    Thanks,

    Seb

  17. Hi,

I've tried to create the USB Boot with myHack and folow your instructions, but when I've finish the installation always appear the error Boot0 and BootTest.

I've tried also to boot from USB and select the HD in verbose mode without any result.

    Could somebody help me?

May be my error Is when I created the USB boot with myHack, but always follow the instructions.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

The boot0 error sometimes comes up when using an SSD, if you are then you need to update chameleon.

Check you are in AHCI mode in the BIOS. (you could also try resetting bios settings to factory default)

Check you have an 8GB flash drive, and try a different USB port.

Try formatting the stick and putting the installer on it again - some files may have been corrupted.

Lastly try running myfix on the USB installer if you havent already, this usually fixes no/slow boot issues.

Hope this helped, let me know if you get it working!

    Seb

  18. Do I let it sit for 30 mins after I have selected shutdown or while it's up and running?

Either - it doesnt matter. It wont shutdown because the system is waiting for the process to finish, however i recommend just leaving it on until its finished.

Let me know if you have any success!

  19. Hi,

I was wondering if the modular bay is compatible with Mountain Lion. Has anyone ever tried using a Hard Drive or secondary battery in it with OS X?

Also if I were to throw in a secondary SSD for my boot drive, will the data transfer rates be slower than the built in SATA hard drive slot?

    Thanks,

    Seb

  20. ok i have installed ML and working 95% ok but machine will sleep but will not shut down or restart.

has anyone else had this problem ?

im also having some strange things happening with myhack, when i try to run my fix it just comes up with strings of numbers rather than drive names.post-5118-036704500 1344811588_thumb.png

Yes - when you first install, a process called kextcache runs to rebuild the kext cache - the machine will not shutdown or restart until it is done. Just leave the machine on for about 30 mins until it has finished, and then they should work. As for your myhack problem, try booting into the intaller and running a myfix from there.

    Good Luck!

    Seb
