Some questions about installing OS X on Dell Vostro 200

Got it, thank you. I tried using the patched AICPUPM (copied to /Extra/Extensions/ on Local HDD and then installed to /System/Library/Extensions with kextwizard) but the computer would freeze after showing the desktop. So I removed it and now it boots fine. Then I realized that the patched version is for the 10.10.3 to 10.10.5 versions of Yosemite but I am using 10.10 instead.

Should I upgrade to 10.10.5 via the Apple Updates first and then try again?

Would it mess up my current working installation if I updated to 10.10.5?

Anything I should do first in preparation for the upgrade?

Thank you

As far as I know, there is usually no need for any patched AICPUPM with Core2Duo CPUs; the vanilla kext will work just fine. The patched kext is only required for Sandy & Ivy bridge CPUs (and possibly only the mobile versions)...

Install the properly tuned FakeSMC + the right SMBIOS plist and you'll enjoy full CPU speedstepping.

Thank you guys. These are all new concepts to me but I am chugging along.

Jake: Based on what Herve' said, then perhaps I should install NullCPUPowermanagement, update to 10.10.5, remove NullCPUPowermanagement before rebooting, then reboot? No need for patched AICPUPM, right?

Herve': I saw the proper FakeSMC + the right SMBIOS.plist on your Vostro 200 post. Can I set these up after the upgrade to 10.10.5 or should I do these first?

I was able to install FakeSMC into S\L\E using kext wizard. This seems to be working fine. I then repaired permissions and rebuilt cache. I also renamed the old SMBIOS.plist in the Extra folder and moved your SMBIOS to the same directory. I then opened it with Chameleon Wizard, went to the SMBios tab, selected the iMac10,1 and hit Save. It rebooted just fine.

I am still unclear as to what are the proper steps to update to 10.10.5 though. Do I add any NullCPUPowermanagement.kext I can find on Google to \S\L\E with kext wizard, repair permissions and rebuild cache, install 10.10.5 and reboot? I am not sure at which point I would then have to remove the NullCPUPowermanagement.kext, since my system seems to be working fine without it (I don't have one at the moment).

Ok, maybe:

1) Make a copy of my current AppleIntelCPUManagement.kext

2) Place NullCPUPowerManagement.kext in /E/E (should I look for one on the net? because there isn't one installed on my system)

3) Repair permissions and Rebuild cache on /E/E?

4) Install the upgrade to 10.10.5

5) Reboot

6) Rename the AppleIntelCPUManagement.kext in /S/E/L and copy the back up created in step 1 to same folder

7) Repair permissions and Rebuild cache on /E/E?

8) Reboot

Here's what I did in the end:

1) Install Carbon Copy Trial (30 days) and made a backup boot drive of the working 10.10 Yosemite install

2) Made a manual backup of the AppleIntelCpuManagement.kext in /S/L/E and copied it to the Desktop, just in case

3) Downloaded 10.10.5 Combo update, which forces you to restart to install the update

4) Since the OS was not able to reboot after the update (KP about AppleIntelCPUManagement),

5) Booted into Carbon Copy backup boot drive

6) Copied AppleIntelCPUManagement.kext from Carbon Copy backup boot drive to the local drive

7) Used Kext Wizard to install AppleIntelCPUManagement.kext from step 6 into local drive /S/L/E/

8) Repair permissions and rebuild cache on local drive /S/E/L + Repair permissions and rebuild cache on local drive /E/E/

It was then able to reboot fine and i now have 10.10.5 Yosemite. I had to reload the SMBIOS.plist with Chameleon but FakeSMC seems to be still doing its job, since HWMonitor shows me CPU bobbing between 1.6 and 2.5 GHz.
