  1. Okay I don't get this. I built Clover USB from scratch and booted from it. Problem is it never even asked me to select language screen. Instead it went directly to installing High Sierra and gave me same error.

Seems to me I simply have to format entire drive before attempting install. As long as I have Sierra, High Sierra is simply going to try to upgrade regardless of what I do.

So I decided to install to drive connected to eSATA. Now I get an error saying OSInstall.mpkg file is missing. I built the USB twice following instructions. Ive done this so many times I'm not making a mistake.

I guess I just need a break here. I'm going to wait until someone publishes a guide for installing 10.13 from scratch.

  2. Jake, Herve, All, need some advice.

This laptop will only take a slim SSD. I dunno if there are slim HDs out there. Regardless, it does not look like I will be able to overlay High Sierra. So while I can do a scratch install since it is SSD, it will default to APFS and then I can't do dual boot with Windows. Wanted to ask if either of the two options are viable.

    Option A

    1) Find a HD with exact same size as the SSD. Connect it through USB enclosure and clone my Sierra Mac Partition only onto it.

    2) Remove the SSD. Upgrade High Sierra inplace on the HD which will only have Windows and thus I should not hit the problem I've been hitting.

    3) Restore HD partition back onto SSD partition.

    Option B

    1) Delete Windows partition on SSD

    2) Let High Sierra upgrade take place.

    3) Partition SSD again and try reinstall Windows now (will this work?)

    Thanks much.

  3. Asxetos, I've loaned the machine to an extended family member right now. So need few days to come back with DSDT. Thanks.

PD - My plan is to do an inplace upgrade to Clover first. Which means try to get a USB with Clover to boot the laptop, then install Clover on top of Enoch, then try inplace High Sierra upgrade.

Unless I grow in confidence on High Sierra from scratch. I'm working on another laptop right now with which I might try a scratch High Sierra install, with dual boot.

  4. Thanks Jake! I will try the link for creating recovery drive first.

If I mess up and have to reinstall, I will just start from scratch and use your pack. I believe there is a way to intercept APFS converstion when installing from scratch so I could try that so I can dual boot again. Not sure if APFS will prevent dual boot.

    Instructions very well documented here...

    https://davidjb.com/blog/2016/12/creating-a-macos-recovery-partition-without-reinstalling-osx-or-re-running-your-installer/

    Unfortunately still get same error.

Error (async): This partition map modification would make a Windows partition unbootable (-69728)

So I guess my only hope is to reinstall? :-(

PS - I used GParted to shrink my Mac OS partition to leave some free space before the Windows began, but it still will not create recovery partition there..

  5. Hi Jake, I googled my way to remove the install menu item from HS, then relaunched using no APFS, however I still get the same error.

One thing I did notice that is diff from my other dual boots with Enoch is I don't see "Recovery HD" menu item with Clover. Googling seems to indicate this is the issue and I need to repartition my Macintosh Partition in order to create a Recovery partition. Assuming this will fix my problem trying to figure this out right now. Meanwhile could use some advice. Simultaneously almost wondering if should simply create USB for HS and use your pack again, but worried in case it converts to APFS and that's not good for dual boot.

Another issue is v4220 seems to have killed my sound and brightness keys (FN + F3/Pause). This is the symptom where I do get the volume control enabled after I repair permissions however it still does not produce any sound. However, this can wait till later.

  6. I meant I had already upgraded to APFS before I saw the post.

My Clover theme I was trying to fix using Clover configurator. Will try what you mentioned above in config plist. One thing I noticed diff was there is no nvram.plist file in EFI folder like there used to be. I was about to try save to system partition setting, but will defer that

  7. If you are using Clover for your precision, can you kindly share your config.plist? For the life of me I can't Clover to boot on any of my Nvidia Graphics Laptops. I would really like to install Clover on top of Enoch then upgrade to 10.13

  8. Doh! Of course. APFS is the issue. Will keep HFS+ on this laptop. Thanks!

But unfortunately i am gettinng same error. Is it because the helper got installed for APFS? How do i remove it? Thinking it is still trying to use APFS and so trying to format my partition. If HFS+ was taken then it will simply copy High Sierra files.

At least I think this is the issue, else I dunno what to do now. This laptop will only take slim SSDs and I'm fresh out of them. So have to fix this SSD and make it work.

  9. OKay so I patched my Bluetooth. I took the VoodooPS2Controller, and now it works.

I haven't followed Rehabman's instructions, i.e. install the "daemon" but it does not seem to be necessary, since it works. Unless I see wierd behavior I will leave it alone.

Few things, not sure if I'm imagining. Laptop seems to be running slightly slower. Using different SSD so not sure if because of that. OTOH Battery life is much improved. Also I think I am using APFS because I didn't see instructions to launch the installer to preserve HFS+. Just thought I would mention it.

Finally, Clover settings not being saved. My theme is stuck to whatever it was when i rebooted after first 10.13 install.

  10. here are the issues.

    1) Sleep used to work with FN+F1. Not anymore. It now shuts it down (like it does with my E6440). Not that big a deal.

    2) Bluetooth does not work. :-(

    3) Under System Preferences for Trackpad I get "No Trackpad found". So no options to set. But I'm using it. ???

So do I need new kexts? Not sure I should take the 7440 kexts or what.

I will worry about putting serial number back and getting FaceTime to work later.

  11. How would I remember something I don't know about :-). No instructions told me that.

Right now I'm trying the whole process again, just in case I goofed something up. And if you are correct it's going to fail again.

Where do I get "apfs.efi" from? Or to ask another way, can I simply remove the HD, connect it to another laptop via e-Sata, mount the EFI partition, copy that file where it needs to be, then put back in laptop?

PS - I'm looking at backup of my EFI folder on another laptop right now and I don't even see "apfs.efi". So is this something new for 10.13? I know about APFS file system, but I wouldn't think it would switch to it without asking. Can you please reply attaching the file?

  12. So I followed instructions from this thread

    https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/10073-firmware-feature-mask-list/

First thing I noticed when High Sierra was installing was no mouse keyboard. Unsure if this is expected or not. Regardless it completed then restarted back into Clover. Except no bootable volumes were detected. Not my OS partition and neither my Recovery Partition.

I'm restoring my SSD Backup now and will try again. Would really help if someone can inform I'm missing some step. Do I need to burn 10.13 to USB like ordinary Mac users do and reinstall? I simply launched from AppStore and went through with it. When I rebooted I had an extra menu in Clover for "Boot from Install ...". I used that and everything seemed to be going well until the end.

    Thanks much.

  13. First apologies if posting on wrong forum. This seemed like the best one.

Previously when I have tried to upgrade OS minor versions , e.g. 10.12.5 to 10.12.6 through AppStore. I have always failed. I do not recall if this is because of choice of bootloader - Enoch vs Clover - or choice of hardware - Dell vs HP.

So I learnt quickly to download DMG separately and launch from Finder instead of AppStore.

Now I have heard one advantage of Clover is OS updates. So can I expect to update 10.13 from AppStore? Or maybe I can create a standard USB stick like original max owners do and then try? Or do I have to hack it from scratch using guides for creating hack USB sticks and try from scratch.

Just hoping there is easier way to upgrade OS on my existing laptops and I could always work out any device issues if they arise. Hope someone has tried and inplace 10.13 upgrade with Clover and can inform how to do it.

  14. Jake I am assuming that suggestion was for randomly losing sound. Will try.

EDIT - I have narrowed down the problem. It does not matter which CodecCommander is used.

50% of the time if I restart Mac OSX, Sound stops working. Everything is enabled, but I just don't hear sound.

100% of the time if I restart into Windows, then again restart into Mac OSX, same problem.

Shutdown, then power on fixes it.

Also I've switched to MBA5,2 to get my DW 1520 working. Not sure if this has any bearing on the sound, just mentioning.

  15. JAke, I see my DVD now. I had to disable sata port for DVD in BIOS boot, restart and enable again. Now I can see it.

The sound goes off and on intermittently. I am trying to diagnose but very hard. Sometimes I lose after sleep, sometimes after restart, sometimes in the middle of using laptop where sound button on menu at simply disables. I always get it back if I shutdown and power on.

I know you mentioned solution is not perfect and if so I can live with it.

PS - still using MBP11,1 since I know it was not smbios issue.

  16. I switched my SMBIOS in config.plist to MacBookAir6,2. I was so hoping that would fix it but it didn't :-(

Just checking - do I have to do anything else after changing SMBIOS? Like maybe regenerate SSDT?

Also just so I am providing correct information, My DVD player does not have any initialization error or anything. DVD player launches fine. It is just that the menubar applet says "No Drive" when I go to eject. DPCIManager lists it as "Unknown Device", but it does find it. System Report does not find it.

PS - I reverted everything back, but now I have NO Sound :-(. How is this possible? I did get latest iTunes update. Could it have killed my sound? There is really no way I messed up. I didn't modify existing config.plist. I created a copy in which I changed the SMBIOS and then at startup selected the new config_smbios.plist. I thought at first MBA6,2 killed my sound, but then I restarted and booted normally with config.pliet but still sound is gone and the only thing that changed is I installed iTunes.

  17. Okay, I get 44 warnings when I compile but I guess that should be okay. I'll get working on the wifi patch.

ALSO - I just saw two more issues.

    1) My DVD drive is not detected

    2) HW Monitor shows all sensors and battery percentage perfectly (I got the sensor kexts). However Mac OS Battery always higher percentage. I tried a few ACPIBattery kexts but no dice. Usually it is the HWMonitor that is messed up until right sensors are present. First time for me it is other way round. I have one of those fat extended life batteries. Not sure if that's a reason and I need some DSDT patch?
