Believe it or not, I picked one up at garage sale. Haven't taken a look at it. Was simply going to put Linux on it, but if mac o's is possible... I know it has penryn CPU, not sure what graphics it has. Assuming it has NVIDIA, is 10.12 a possibility?
-
Sorry I see that now. And I changed it. However, when I did I got a kernel dump on startup. Attaching my info.plist here. I found the GPUId in only one place. Info.plist.zip
-
Actually I see my D630 and e6500 having the same GPU. I checked it is 10de06eb. However, now I'm confused. I thought the idea was to leave AGPM kext alone so an OS update wouldn't need re-fixing. And we only inject in the FakeSMC. I will look again, but in the Info list for FakeSMC in your post, I couldn't spot the device id, so assumed fix was independent of it.
-
@Herve - I was looking at this link below. https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/7807-nvidia-gpu-performance-tuning-with-agpm/ Like you say there, why mess with modifying the Vanilla kext when you can inject through FakeSMC. So the D630 and e6500 must have the same GPU. The FakeSMC from the D630 pack already has the patch applied for the Thresholds. Please let me know what I"m missing. PS - One odd thing I noticed is the patch sample for FakeSMC plist and also the one in the D630 pack which I'm using both have macosx10.9 for DTSDKName key. Not sure if that matters, and I should make it 10.12.

Sheesh! Now I know why my Inspiron 1720 used to run hot with 10.11. I will experiment with my Latitude e6500, now with 10.12. Thank you very much!

I've had this issue with every laptop - dell, lenovo, hp - that I got el capitan installed on. And now Sierra, so I'm assuming going forward this is an issue. Googling told me it is known issue. I haven't heard anyone fix this problem any other way than turning off hardware acceleration, and which could also be a urban myth. No, I haven't done diddly with GPU throttling. Where do I begin?
-
@Herve, you misunderstand. I know how to change settings through the browser itself. The problem is that Settings page is also HTML and it will render with glitches/artifacts just like any other web page, so it is quite impossible to go and turn hardware acceleration off. So I'm looking at a way to locate and change where Chrome saves that setting on my hard disk. I've searched online for all the places google saves settings/preferences and I see some values but not one for hardware acceleration. Hence my post.
-
I have had this issue since 10.11 and have same issue with 10.12. This is not an issue with installing OS X on PC laptops. It is a problem even on Mac Laptops. Chrome does not display pages unless hardware acceleration is turned off. The problem is even the settings page does not render properly to scroll down to it under Advanced Settings and turn it off. So I've hunted high and low for months on who can tell me how to get to the Settings using Terminal to turn the darn setting off. I've gone and looked at Preferences and looked in every while, but I don't see that option. If it's there then its not in plain text. Is there anything I can try? Not being able to run Chrome is a big pain in the butt.

The existing FakeSMC kext from D630 pack has all the plugins and is not causing any issues. I do want to monitor the temperatures so i need the plugin kexts. I can try the new RehabMan kexts keeping everything in E/E and see what happens. If it doesn't work, no big deal. My laptop right now is eminently usable. I'm a happy camper. And good to know 10.13 will work on it as well !!! So far AppleIntel1000 kext not causing any issues, touch wood.
-
One confusion I've had with taking latest FakeSMC is that Rehabman version always has the "Plugin" kexts separate. So do I just take the FakeSMC.kext file? Or take all the kext files? Or should I copy the Plugin kexts into folder and make up my own FakeSMC.kext. Finally it also ships with HWMonitor. Should I use it?

Thanks for the lspcidrv education. Useful to have. I read up your post on it. Unsure if there is a latest version of myHack (while I don't think so) to copy those programs to usr/local, usr/bin. Will be the last thing I will try. Right before I take a look at Bluetooth. The Dell kext come to think of it I've had from Yosemite days on this laptop and unless I'm mistaken was provided by insanelymac. I know it is Broadcom. Got the latest USBInjectAll kext. With dsdt patch for EH stuff, now all USB ports working! I made sure they continue to work after coming out of sleep. And closing/opening lid sleeping also works! Got the latest ACPIBatteryManager kext. HWSensor now showing 100%. One issue is at boot or after coming out of sleep, now my Battery Icon has an X in it. If I plug/unplug power cable then I get it back with percent and everything. I believe I had same issue with 10.11. Not a terrible problem to have. Wanted to ask if newer FakeSMC will work? I'm using one from the D630 pack right now. Also I installed 10.12.6 while waiting for response, so sitting quite pretty at this time. You guys make it so simple. Thank you!

PROGRESS !!! Good News - QE/CI works. Tested first looking at ScreenSaver. - DVD player didn't work (initial attempt to test QE/CI). Used IOAHCISerialATAPI_Injector.kext from 10.11 install (which Bronxtech had provided then). WORKS! - lpscidrv.kext and BMC5722D.kext I believe are supposed to help Networking. In any case they don't seem to apply to e6500. Searched for 10.12 version of AppleIntelE1000.kext and now Ethernet Works! - wifi worked OOTB (DW 1510) - Supplied VoodooHDA.kext didn't work. Strange because it is version 2.8.8. In any case downloaded and installed 2.8.8 package and Sound Works. Maybe it has to be in /S/L/E from the get go. Had to patch the kext for Mute and VolumeChange fixes. - Sleep works. Tested manually putting it to sleep and waking using Power button. Didn't test all scenarios, but for now it is okay. - Using DellBluetoothHCI.kext I had with 10.11. Works! Like then, I can't turn Bluetooth on/off, it is always ON. I can live with it. Bad News - USB_Injector from 10.11 did not work. Herve had provided a patched dsdt along with this kext for 10.11. Didn't work with patched dsdt either. So right now using dsdt used at start up and have only the lower right USB port working (which I also used for usb boot) - HWSensor says Battery at 117% charged Extra folder is attached. If anyone can help... Extra.zip

@Bronxtech. Yeah I tried that. That wasn't the problem. So I had multiple issues. First, I forgot I should use the lower USB port on the right. Second, the D630 pack Boot.plist did not have Timeout value. And as it so happens, I was overwriting on a Yosemite HD, so I mistakenly thought it was trying to boot of the HD, when what it was doing is not give me opportunity to interrupt and specify -f -v. Not sure what QuiteBoot does in the D630 pack boot plist So I just decided to use my 10.11 boot plist and it booted! I also have npci=0x2000. Not sure necessary anymore but I knew it was with 10.11. In any case, I formatted two partitions, and like I do always am installing windows on the 2nd partition, then will boot back from USB and try install Sierra. I took all the kexts in the D630 bootpack except the USB Injector for now. Not sure about the Ethernet Kext, I know I was using AppleIntel1000E with the e6500, but I will figure all that out by trial and error. So far so good. Let's see how far I can get. PS - Can I use my USBInjector from 10.11. After all, I'm using my DSDT for e6500. Thinking it will just work.

Starting this thread since I'm having some issues booting of the USB for Sierra I created. I followed instructions as per this thread on Herve's advice. https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/8645-dell-latitude-d630-with-core2duo-and-nvidia-quadro-nvs-135m-el-capitansierra/ However I can't get my USB to boot. It attempts to boot and then skips over to HD to try to boot. I've built the USB twice. Is there some step missing, or how can I check. I installed latest Enoch 2889. Thanks for any help. PS - Should I use Boot.plist I used with 10.11 for the e6500? I see the D630 packs version is missing kext-dev-mode=1 and npci=0x2000. I don't think this should prevent USB from booting, but just asking.

@Herve. Turns out CPU-Z telling me my e6500 also has Penryn CPU . I wanted to ask because was not sure whether Nvidia would cause problems like in some cases. So I will try with e6500 first. Thank you.
-
Hi Herve, I have to ask. Will Sierra install on other dell laptops with Penryn CPUs and NVidia graphics, just like the D630? It would seem some Latitude E6400 have Penryn CPUs. Appreciate any clarification.

Okay will do BIOS downgrade first. One thing. I have dual booted all my laptops. I could never get it done installing OSX first. So I always install Windows first then OSX and have no trouble whatsoever regardless of whether I used Enoch or Clover (the one time I did with the Lenovo T510). Installing Windows first I never had to muck with the registry or do any special partitioning or anything. I wait till I get a bootable USB, then partition 1st partition for OSX, and second for Windows. Then turn things off. Then I install Windows to its partition. Then I install OSX to its partition. Worked every time.
-
No problem to reinstall windows I think. Need to figure out how to downgrade BIOS. If only I had known. Will need some time and then come back with results. If I get anywhere with current BIOS, as long as the "artifacts" are not painful, I might stick with it. Thanks, as always.
-
@JakeLo. Bummer! I updated to the latest BIOS already and it is A19. Problem is I was on A08 and Windows kept bothering me to update "or dire consequences" while I was trying to test things out. What is my best way forward now? Also should I change to UEFI or keep Legacy?

I managed to get my hands on a used e6330. Was hoping to use this guide to get me started on Sierra. Thinking it will be similar. https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/8883-dell-latitude-e6230-with-i5-3340m-hd4000-and-1366x768-lcd-mavericksyosemiteel-capitansierra/ There seems to be a lot to be done. Just wanted to check if there were DSDT / SSDT packs I could use?
-
@acrox999 Did you get anywhere? I am visiting forum after a long time. Had some personal things to take care off. I was pleasantly surprised to see this post by Herve. https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/8645-dell-latitude-d630-with-core2duo-and-nvidia-quadro-nvs-135m-el-capitansierra/ I recall him helping me out using D630 as a basis for understanding mac os install and I successfully installed on my E6500 and I1720. Since Sierra not available for download on Core2Duo machine I assumed they were not compatible. But it seems on D630 it was successful, so was really hoping it would be on other dells too. I have NVidia graphics in both of my old laptops. Really appreciate if you can let me know if you succeeded and if so, how.

Actually I did not even open the D630 dsdt. The dsdt I am using is one I patched in bits and pieces before i installed Yosemite. I did not change anything for El Capitan. So it's just a coincidence. My 10.11 install seems to be going well. The spurious overheating went away and has not come back. I am abandoning sd card fix. Everytime I try something I mess things up and how to recover. I have Windows also so can always save there and grab from Mac OS. I am actually going to try and see if I can save from Mac OS to windows disk. Not been able to get that working ever.
-
@Herve. Sorry I missed it. Attached the raw DSDT. PS - Needless to say the DSDT I am using now is the same I used with Yosemite. Honestly do not recall how many patches I applied. This was my first laptop I installed Mac OS on so was still learning. DSDT_I1720_RAW.zip

Sorry I must have accidentally eliminated it when I made a copy onto my desktop and zipped it. More importantly, NO, I did not use the D630 dsdt, only most of the kexts from the pack. Remember I had to use my dsdt which I used on Yosemite all along and then create usb injector. I am not connecting why I should use D630 dsdt for SD card to work. Or maybe you are pointing to something else I am doing wrong? I did try the D630 dsdt just now and it does boot my laptop. Anyways I do have a bigger problem now. Laptop running very hot. Something is blocking sleep and wondering if it is Hwmonitor itself

I think it is time to move on as far the SD Card . I've tried 5 different VoodooSDHC already. Can't say I can complain really. 10.11.6 working fabulously. Even applied security update. Attaching final Extra folder. Hopefully helps someone. Thank you one, and all. Extra_I1720_10.11.6.zip
