  1. Hi Toyreon, I've sent you a PM - I'm afraid that reading through the wikis, using google and a bit of trial and error is the best method - the wiki is pretty comprehensive but it does expect a certain amount of technical confidence. I think I'm right in saying that you need a hackintosh or a mac with at least 10.6 for a chance of making a Lion boot stick the simplest way. Anyway I've PM'd you so you can send me an email address so I can send you my setup/install setup notes - but this may confuse even more!!
  2. I bought one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251038443708?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_500wt_1203 of ebay as wiki (http://www.osxlatitude.com/wwan-in-osx-on-dell-latitude/) recommended them and one other type of card.
  3. Once connected have you tried going into System Prefs > Display and then trying 'Detect Displays'? (you can add an icon to the menu bar for quick access)
  4. Install the IO80211Family.kext.zip from here: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=267408 Using Kext Helper form here: http://cheetha.net/ Unzip the kext file, launch Kext Helper, drag the kext into window. Put your password in and apply. Once done reboot (fingers crossed) and WIFI working The above fixed my wifi on D620 and D430 with DW1395 cards

    myHack 3.0

Many thanks Syonagar. Would be good to have a note at the top of the wiki as a warning about myhack3 compatibility and a link to this thread about progress and work around if people want to use/test myhack 3. Would it be possible to osxlatitude to host myhack 2.1 with authors permission for the moment?
  7. I used a Lion USB stick created with Myhack 2.1 with no issues (wifi card swapped from Intel to Broadcom before install). Seem to be issues with sticks created with myhack 2.2 and 3 (reasons beyond my knowledge but perhaps related to version of chameleon integrated). I have a copy of myhack 2.1 - if you PM me I can send you a link to my dropbox copy. It's worth ago if none of the useful advice above works.
  8. You need a USB (doesn't have to be very big). unetbootin is used to create a boot USB stick (http://tuxtweaks.com/2009/09/create-a-bootable-freedos-usb-drive-on-windows/) create it so it has freedos on it (and the guide is to create it on a windows PC so assume you have access to windows). A MAC version is on the sourceforge page http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/ - steps to create the stick will be the same as the tuxtweaks guide. Once created download and copy the D820I.EXE (rename it from the long version name so it conforms to DOS name length restrictions) to the usb stick (unzipped from the correct download from http://www.osxlatitude.com/custom-bios-update-with-slic-apple-logo-and-edps-dsdt/). Make sure your laptop is connecting to mains power. Boot off usb. Hit enter for default load. Select option 2 and hit enter. Once at a: prompt type c: and hit enter. At c: prompt type dir/w to view contents of USB stick. Type D820I.EXE and follow the prompts to flash.
  9. Whats the fan activity and CPU temperature like? http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
  10. 2.1 seems to be a safe bet. No archive on the myhack site but I have v2.1 if you pm me I can send you a link to my dropbox copy.
  11. Great news - credit to the dev of myhack. I suspect issues with myhack 2.2 and 3 are related to the updated Chameleon integrated into myhack? Perhaps admins here can secure the myhack v2.1 to host here - even better would be a OSXLatitude version for each model?? - but perhaps that is the "something great coming"? Cheers
  12. You seemed to of got access to a OSX 10.6 + machine to use myhack 3 then? A number of threads regarding issues with myhack 3 - if you would like a copy of myhack 2.1 (some other posters had issues with myhack 2.2 as well) then please PM me - then assuming you have access to a OSX machine you can create usb stick again with myhack 2.1 and see how it goes - following the wiki here for stick creation and install wiki (using osxlatitude approved chameleon version linked in install wiki).
  13. I helped a couple of people setup USB sticks with myhack 2.1 as their attempts with myhack 2.2 failed (so assume Latitudes are seemingly having issues with myhack 2.2 and higher). So if you want myhack 2.1 to try then PM me and I will send you a link to my dropbox copy - then follow the wiki as normal for install - manual install of chameleon (osxlatitude approved version linked in install wiki), EDP etc
  14. Follow the WIKI - http://www.osxlatitude.com/custom-bios-update-with-slic-apple-logo-and-edps-dsdt/'>http://www.osxlatitude.com/custom-bios-update-with-slic-apple-logo-and-edps-dsdt/ Updating via USB boot stick works fine. Here's my take on the process as it gives some links to assist unetbootin is used to create a boot USB stick(http://tuxtweaks.com/2009/09/create-a-bootable-freedos-usb-drive-on-windows/)with freedos Once created copy the D620_OSX_NVIDIA.EXE to the usb stick (unzipped from the correct download from http://www.osxlatitude.com/custom-bios-update-with-slic-apple-logo-and-edps-dsdt/). Boot off the usb stick and choose the (this is from memory) "boot without drivers" or some such option (basically all your after is a dos prompt to enable you to execute the D620_OSX_NVIDIA.EXE (the name will be truncated due to dos limitations) program from the drive leeter of the USB stick (d:?).

    Lion or SL?

Thanks for the feedback. Yes your probably right - cold boot times are not that interesting unless someones doing something to make it quicker and we want to see the improvement. I went for Lion in the end and to be perfectly honest I can't see any real performance issue. I launch a browser, a terminal window, watch a bit of YouTube and that's about it - the D430's hardly a power house for gaming and video production anyway so what else would you do. I do use sleep and that circumnavigates cold booting anyway (apart from the odd occasion when the screen's dim so I need to reboot).
  16. Try the wiki's "How to install OSX on your computer" - http://www.osxlatitude.com/howto-install-osx/ You need 2gb RAM for Lion install All the wiki's are worth a good read and then as always not everything is always 100% clear or 100% successful when you try - but a good browse of the D630 support forum will yield most answers - just be specific and detailed as possible when asking - all here are very helpful
  17. Have the same issue on a D620 - pressing either volume up once from mute or press mute button again after muted so only one 'square' shows in on-screen volume bar and its too loud for lowest volume. Seems to be an OSX 'issue': http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9986920#post9986920 Perhaps this could help?: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20110730172909171 update: tried the scripts and created them as apps - muted the sound and ran the + app once and volume straight up to the normal 'loud' quietest volume - even adjusted increment to 1 and also tried 0.5 - makes no difference the lowest volume is still loud?!
  18. Yes mines about 1 min 40 sec, enabling Sleep (see wiki) is very quick but you always have to leave power in when leaving for long periods.
  19. Great - glad you got it working In the first week I had a couple of kernel panics - but seemed to settle down. From cold my D620 (my only hackintosh at the moment) sometimes freezes occasionally - but a power off and on cures that (I think I have read this can and will happen on osxlatitudes). I haven't got a broadcom card for my D430 yet so can't comment on performance on D430's at the moment. Cheers
  20. Don't see that you have any kext's loaded for your card, these are mine that are anything network related: 43 4 0x1381000 0x25000 0x24000 com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily (2.0) 44 1 0x17ab000 0x2c000 0x2b000 com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family (320.1) 45 0 0x17d7000 0x1e9000 0x1e8000 com.apple.driver.AirPortBrcm43xx (423.91.27) 46 0 0x22cf000 0x18000 0x17000 com.apple.iokit.AppleBCM5751Ethernet (2.1.0d21) At the bottom of the post I directed to you before (https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/256-how-to-install-lion-on-d620/page__view__findpost__p__8050) it mentions the editing of a plist - but to be honest that didn't work for me but perhaps worth trying it - the solution you have tried at the top of my post is what worked for me. Perhaps it's worth running the kext helper again using the IO80211Family.kext now you have a fresh install?
  21. Thanks for the feedback craigloosenth. Got my D430 today - running XP at the moment - once I have my broadcom wifi card I will be set for another osxlatitude - from your comments I think I will give Lion a go - love it on my d620 and nice to have the current OSX. Cheers

    Lion or SL?

Hi all. Thanks to osxlatitude's influence I have 3 Dell D series now - and very happy I am to I have a D620 with Lion. A D630 still with XP (but going to Lion soon). And a D430 I received today currently running XP. I'm waiting for a Broadcom card for the D430 and will then be ready for OSX - but I'm a bit concerned about the ability of the D430 (1.2ghz Core2Duo + 2gb RAM) to run Lion well - should I be? Or should I go SL - or no real difference performance wise? Only issues I have with OSX on the Dell Latitudes is the cold boot time but that disadvantage over Windows is minimal in reality. Any comments welcome. Do other OSX Latitude members feel that having cold boot time benchmarks would be useful/interesting?
  23. No worries. No need to brand the card if you don't want to it works as a generic card. By the way - how do you find D430 performance with Lion? Whats the boot time like (from cold to usable desktop)?
  24. Intel cards are no go - you need to replace with a Broadcom one (only G's no N cards). Apparently all development on Intel cards for 10.6 / 10.7 (official or community) stopped a while a go with no positive results. The post below should help - info on kext and process to apply once you have swapped the card (and the Ethernet/bluetooth PAN is an odd one, I have the same (none) issue as you on a D620 Lion install): https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/256-how-to-install-lion-on-d620/page__view__findpost__p__8050 Link to a UK seller of cheapest card that will work - don't but them all as I might need one for a D430 on its way to me http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-Inspiron-1525-DW-1395-WiFi-Card-/180734485477?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL&hash=item2a149d63e5#ht_2034wt_1325 As for the bluetooth assistant - I'm sure I had this issue a while back and their was an option to disable search for BT KB and Mouse......ahh yes this was the fix here: https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/1020-dell-latitude-e6510-boot-up-and-system-issues/page__view__findpost__p__6949 Cheers
  25. Thanks craigloosenth for the detailed break down - invaluable info for anyone contemplating a triple boot. One question though - how do you find performance of Lion on a D430? I have just bought a 1.2ghz D430 with 2gb RAM (just today not got it yet) and reading a few posts it seems like Snow Leopard performs best. Use Lion on a D620 so would prefer to use Lion but not if performance is poor. Cheers
