As per Hervé's advice, when I have a slow shutdown issue on my E6500, rebuilding the caches and repairing permissions resolves the issue along with a reboot.

I'm at a loss - prep and compatibility seem fine, kexts are known to work, but it seems like a framebuffer issue. Not sure if something on your Mini that was downloaded has impacted the way the image is transferred to the installer. Try (if possible) creating your installer on another Mac or hackintosh to eliminate the Mini as the source of the problem. There was another member who had an issue with the device he was creating the installer from (I believe it was in the Mountain Lion Anyone topic - yes, post #361). Also, take heart, read this: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/282276-reboot-during-loading-kexts-when-installin-mountain-lion/ - persistence pays off (read posts 2 & 9).

There is a process by which you can stop the download as it goes to install on you machine. You can then take the InstallESD.dmg from the download and restore it to a flash drive. It allows you to preserve that image for future use and also serves as a bootable restore and repair tool which will allow install on multiple Macs without having to download it again. Try this link: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=23486. If you allow the process to continue, as you noticed, when completed installing, the installer removes that image from your desktop. Do you have a copy of the Mountain Lion installer in your Applications folder? If so, are you pointing MyHack to that image when asked? If not, you may be missing the installer files from your newly created MyHack installer. You can create the installer as shown above and point MyHack to it when asked or save the InstallESD.dmg image on your desktop and point to that.

First, I took the time to re-read this topic in case I missed anything. I noticed you were using the Mac Mini, which appears to be updated to 10.8.3. Am I to assume you allowed it to install normally and are creating the installer with the installed OS?. Have you made a USB boot stick of the .dmg? If you are creating the installer with the 10.8.3 image, using the edited 10.8.2 NVidia kexts should work. I did not need to re-edit them for the 10.8.3 update, the kexts worked without re-editing. When installing, set the BIOS to default settings, change the HDD to AHCI and shut down the wireless components in BIOS. Nothing else should need to be done. Use your installer and try installing. I underlined should because there can always be an exception.

E6410 with nVidia NVS 3100M graphics - Mountain Lion Guide
Darvinko replied to v3ct0r's topic in The Archive
When you format the partition you create in OSx, you format it as MSDOS (fat). When you go to install windows on it, you go to the partition you prepared for Windows with OSx, click on Drive options and then choose to format it. At this time the Windows installer will format it as NTFS. Windows should show as a bootable drive in Chameleon/chimera (chameleon, stolen and rebranded), however it will be labeled as NTFS, you can change that in windows and whatever you label it will show on your bootloader. After that, all that should be needed is to update windows and sync the time so both partitions show the correct time. -
The other possibility I can think of is an issue with a USB connected device. Make sure when doing the initial install that any USB devices are removed (that includes USB mice, keyboards, wireless dongles, etc - if there are any). See if that enables the install, and if so, re-introduce any wireless devices one at a time after install to see if any of them are creating an issue

It was difficult for my to see which version of ML you used to create your installer. Using the information I saw in earlier posts, you have both 10.8.2 and 10.8.3. For purposes of this, use 10.8.2 to create the installer. After installing the kexts, DO NOT run the maintenance from Kext Wizard, just run the (FULL) MyFix after each install. Also run a (FULL) MyFix after copying over the Extra folder to the installer. This will hopefully avoid the re-boot. After it starts installing, when you get to the installer, use disk utility to format the drive, then continue with the install. With about 1-2 minutes left, it will ask about the Extra folder. Choose Use My Own, and in the window point it to the Extra you have placed in the installer and when the three kext notifications come you, choose to delete them. When complete (may say Install failed - it probably did not). Reboot from installer and choose the Hard Drive (whatever you named it during formatting). Should boot into your install and allow you to set up your installation.

You have the correct edits in the Info.plist (obviously, or it wouldn't be working - the internal one). I haven't tried using the microphone jack as I aslo have the webcam and wanted it for FaceTime. I don't even currently possess an external mic to test, so maybe someone else who has either tried or gotten the external to work can jump in here. One thing I know is certain apps which utilize the audio can play hell with the settings. I had installer AirParrot to push movies wirelessly through my AppleTV and it took a couple of hours to diagnose the issue, uninstall and re-apply the settings to allow the internal to work properly. I would image some of the video players might override some settings also. Not sure if that may have caused an issue for you, but figured I'd throw that out there for anyone else who may encounter the issue.

That card is a BCM943228HM4L and is not supported, you will need to use a compatible card. Try a Dell 1510 (or search using PW934 - same card, but often found cheaper this way). A quick eBay (US) search shows them as cheap as $4.75 with shipping.

To make things easier (and quicker), when setting up the drive to install OSx, I do the following: (this is for a dual boot, if making a triple boot, size them and format them accordingly). I set it up using two partitions, the first partition I use for OSx, Go to Volume scheme and choose 2 partitions, go to Options, choose GUID, then OK. Click on the first partition, Label it, choose to format it Mac OSx extended (Journaled). I click on the second partition, label it Windows, and format with MSDOS (fat). After the disk is partitioned, i remove installer, insert my Windows media, I set up as a custom install (New install, not upgrade), install to the partition named Windows (choose drive options and choose to format that partition prior to installing), click OK and next. When windows has finished installing, I reboot with the OSx installer, install OSx on to the first partition. Make your OSx partition active. By doing this second, your Chameleon bootloader isn't removed by Windows, saving the trouble of re-installing. You should be able to boot without the installer next time around, to the Chameleon screen. Update both partitions, and if desired, rename your Windows partition, and add the time fix (so both partitions show the same time)

You can check this topic; DELL LATITUDE E6430 on this site, by member JakeLo, linked here; http://forum.osxlati...327-dell-e6430/ See if this gives you a good start at installing or if graphics kexts will need to be modified/added.

I set up another hard drive last night, doing a dual boot to validate the process. I will go through the setup. I used a copy of 10.8.2 (though 10.8.3 should also work). First, I downloaded the bootpack, unzipped it and removed the "arch" & "i386" key and string from the org.chameleon.Boot.plist, replaced it in the folder and left the folder on the desktop. I downloaded the 10.8.2 edited NVidia kexts and put them on the desktop, then I downloaded the IOPCIFamily.kext and placed it on the desktop and downloaded kext wizard. I then created my installer using MyHack (and as mentioned 10.8.2). After creating my installer, using Kext wizard, I replaced the IOPCIFamily.kext. Make sure you click on the installer tab, click on backup replaced kexts, drag the kext into the box, choose to install it to the USB (not the hard drive and choose S/L/E LAST. (if you do not choose it last, it will switch the install to E/E). Use MyHack to run a MyFix (FULL) on the USB. Do the same thing with your 3 NVidia kexts (again, make sure to install them to S/L/E by choosing that LAST and run a Full MyFix again. Last, open the USB installer, right click on the Extra folder within and send to trash. Take the Extra folder (the bootpack) on your desktop that you modified earlier, copy it, and paste it in the installer window you removed the folder from. Close it and run a my fix (full) on the USB. Eject it when completed. I had to force eject mine. Make sure BIOS is set to AHCI, and shut off wireless when installing. *****If installing only OSx, plug in installer, reboot, tapping the f12 key to bring up the one time boot menu, choose your USB, use verbose (-v) on boot. Use disk utility to format your drive, choosing GUID partition in options, name the partition whatever you like (Macintosh OSx, whatever and OSX journaled (extended), click apply. Exit disk utility, continue with the installer, choosing to install on the newly formatted drive (Depending on the flash drive and hard drive should take from 15 - 30 minutes). Near the end with 1 - 2 minutes left, a pop-up will appear asking to use either the Generic Extra or your own. Choose your own, then in the box that opens, choose the Extra folder (probably a few down from the top, then open, it will install the bootpack. You will get three pop-ups about deleting kexts, choose yes on all three. A few minutes later it will complete (may say it failed, most likely it didn't). At restart, tap the f2 key to enter BIOS and turn wireless options back on, hit exit and you should boot into your install and set up ML. If you want to do a dual boot with Windows, let me know, the initial partitioning is a little different, I will explain it.

Based on what you've indicated you've done, and assuming you have used the laptop to run another OS prior to the installation attempt(s) of ML, my thoughts are there is either a corrupt download (either of the OS, MyHack or one of the kexts) or a flash drive or hard drive that is bad or failing, or wasn't formatted completely. You said you used App Store downloads, Turned off or removed anything that could have interfered with installation and appear to have used the right kexts. Some things I can think of: try using the SATA drive to install to, remove your downloads and run disk utility to repair permissions on the drive that is being used to create the installer and re-format the installer flash drive, maybe even with a security pass format (or use another drive). The thing you mentioned that seemed odd was your inability to properly eject the installer drive upon completing creation. One other thing I thought of - what BIOS version are you running? A27 should be the latest.

You can use the 10.8.3 image, but try just using the kexts for 10.8.2 (and if those don't work try the first set of modified kexts), you can just plug the installer into your Mac or Hackintosh and swap them, run a full fix and see if you're able to install. I, personally did not have an issue with the 10.8.2 kexts when updating to 10.8.3, but added it when DaFOB indicated he did and used those as a workaround. Try to get ML installed first and then correct any issues. If they work properly, leave them.
-
Try removing the NVidia kexts listed for 10.8.3 from your installer and try using the kexts for 10.8.2 (run a MyHack Full fix on the installer after), see if there is any change.
-
Either one should work. I have gotten to add the UID after an install (different method) wouldn't recognize the graphics card without it
-
Try to see if using PCIRootUID=1 on boot helps at all. Permission was not granted to view the screen shots you posted.

Sleep is in issue that can be hit or miss on these. Probably the best your going to get is STR (Suspend to Ram). Fingerprint reader is something that has eluded us for a while. If you want to see a more accurate reading for processor speed and Memory speed add these lines to you SMBIOS.plist: SMmaximalclock 2533 SMmemspeed 800 As for mike jack, I assume you want the jack, not the internal microphone - look at post#5 in this thread: https://osxlatitude.com/index.php?/topic/2165-e6400-audio-issues/, then go to System Preferences, Audio, Input and make sure the microphone jack box is selected.
-
It was likely the graphics kexts causing the issue. Did you install OSx using a guide on this site?

One member, DaFOB, had an issue with Graphics kexts - he has placed the edited nVidia kexts in his forum - Mountain Lion on E6400 in 5 Steps! I had an issue with VooDooHDA (v. 2.7.4), which required a re-install, many others have indicated no issues. Other forums I have been on indicted issues with audio, not related to VooDooHDA. Unfortunately, you won't really know until you try. There are workarounds if you experience issues.
-
We run the gamit - I had it break Audio (causing a KP with VooDooHDA 2.7.4). Deleted, rebooted, installed VooDooHDA 2.8.2, problem solved. My desktop had no issues. Herve indicates no issues with his other than the false "Installation Failed" message (which I got on the E6400 also). Neither of us has graphics kext issues. I used update via the App store, Herve used Combo update.
-
Good News on the 10.8.3 update. Installed updates (also needed AirPort Utility, iTunes and RAW Compatability for iPhoto) to a backup drive, rebooted to a KP (caused by VooDooHDA 2.7.4), rebooted again, same result. Rebooted into Safe Mode, used USB mouse (keyboard worked fine), deleted VooDooHDA.kext. Next reboot went fine (of course no audio). Installed latest VooDooHDA 2.8.2, rebooted fine and with audio. Repaired permissions, multiple normal reboots. Just a note: if you're happy with the audio kext you can try deleting it and re-installing it after a reboot, it will often work properly after a re-install.

EDP is something that needs some adjustment for these models. Until the issues with it can be worked out, it is advised that you use normal methods to maximize your laptop settings.

There are a couple of guides for installing Mountain Lion of the E6400/6500 in the forums, and there is no reason you can not install on yours. Keep in mind however, that the experience varies with the different GPU's. The nVidia allows for full QE/CI, whereas the Intel GMA4500 limits your graphics experience.

The DT781 is a dell part number. This particular one has an Intel GPU. Make sure you are replacing a MB with Intel graphics, or you will likely have to get a new heatsink (if it doesn't come with one). They make at least two different Intel motherboards, so may I suggest that you use your Service Tag at the dell website to see which MB is in yours and get the same board as a replacement (you can find the components of your particular machine with the Service tag - Google Dell warranty status). Although they (the Intel boards for this unit) are fundamentally the same, it's best to avoid surprises. Might I also suggest when buying from eBay that you buy from a reliable reseller who will offer a warranty for replacement as many are companies who get off lease products and use damaged ones to harvest parts from, often without testing, or with minimal testing. Keep in mind if yours has a NVidia GPU, these units were among those plagued by problems with faulty GPU's and they may not have been replaced. I might add, when viewing the component list for your computer, you may see more than one MB listed. Look to the left of the part description, if it has a "1" (or higher number as in the case of screws, memory, etc.), it is in yours, if it has a "0", it is NOT in yours.
