Try using the left port (usb 2.0). What boot pack have you tried or you just using the generic boot pack? Take a look at this guide and boot pack. Very similar to your system specs.

Did you look at the updates on the bottom of the guide? I believe adding HDAEnabler and the new AppleHDA should fix the audio. For iMessage, click on the iMessage link on my signature file below for instruction to fix it. As for Brightness, did you try Fn+F3(scrollLock) /Fn+Insert(Pause)? If that doesn't work, try Brightness Slider.app.

Follow guide here to do your build, you'll need BIOS version A11, otherwise you'll encounter artifacts. Make sure to select your secondary drive as the destination! Once booted, we'll work on getting the correct ssdt file for your processor.

Helped a friend install Mavericks on this. It's different from the one in compatibility list as this one doesn't have Sandybridge processor, but the 1st Generaion i5.
